I was messin around trying to free up space ,went to shut down and nothing ,every time i go to shut down it goes to start again it will only go on standby.
Any ideas.
Runnin windows 98.

WINDOWS 98 ??

get a dodgy copy of XP pro - like most people do - I'm sure with your contacts you can .

Seems to fix most things and much more stable

on xp that sort of behaviour can mean a virus. usual prob with w98 is hanging on shut down

i'd follow motomartin's advice if your pc is up to it.

This might be worth a try: If memory serves me right you should be able to find the sysem file checker utility at - Start - Programs-Accesories-System Tools- System Information-Tools.

If you start this checker and it finds any system file errors it will ask for the 98 CD to put the original/hopefully uncorrupted fles back. Sometimes this does solve some issues - it is a long shot though.

Another tool that works in 98 (and ME if the built-in System restore does not work) is scanreg /restore - lets you restore the registry to an earlier copy. You need to boot the PC in DOS, navigate to C:\Windows\Command - here you enter scanreg /restore. It should provide you with the dates of the registry backups it finds - usually in US date format. If you can find a date where you are sure everything was OK select it and press Enter. After a while the PC will restart and you should be back in business.

Before trying any of these it might be a good idea to backup all data - rather often on 98 in fact - things can and do go wrong.

Hope this helps

Walter :)

........Or before that check for spy-ware. These things can realy play hell on a p.c.

Links here . There maybe nothing there but its always worth checking.;)

Runnin windows 98.

Try starting in 'Safe Mode', when the PC is booting up press F8 key,or possibly F5, and select safe mode option. Once up and running check for viruses and spyware using any of the freely available programs.

Good Luck!

I've had the same problem ever since I installed a firewire card just after I bought my PC 3 years ago.

This is known fault on 98. Have a look here to see if it's any use. It didn't help me but you might find something there.

Failing that, set your shutdown to be "Restart in Ms-DOS mode" then simply switch the power off when you get the DOS prompt.

Cheers

Dick

if, after you've gone through ALL of MS's troubleshooting suggestions & pc still plays up, and it will, trust me, look for the w98 shutdown patch on MS support site somewhere. i have it somewhere if you can't find it.

i've had much success with it for w98 PCs that hang on shutdown (never had one that restarts).

to solve your prob. what you should do in order of effectiveness:

install XP

or

run spybot, adaware & anti virus on your pc

then if it still don't work

apply shutdown patch

Thanks Chappies !

Took it to a local "WIZZARD" and he sorted it in a matter of hours
Says he put a Patch on the shut down ,and this behaviour is
common with windows 98 .
And all for only €20 ,,which i thought wasnt bad.
What say ye all ?
Less than £14GBPs,
