I am certain its an earth, I've cleaned the one on the voltage reg and the engine earth adjacent to the gear lever. The engine starts fine so its not the one on the gearbox breather. Can anyone suggest my next move.

If the bulb (as per Mikeyboy, and I think this is the most likely cause, too) is ok and you have had the bike a while and it's a new issue (new bike? recently played with wiring? playing with fuse box? lots of insulating tape covering dodgy joints? so much to ask), a few questions spring to mind, like, does it happen when the rear brake pedal is pressed? What happens when you select parking lights with ignition on/off? Any other wiring modifications not stated?

Solved, I had an LED rear light unit which has been in place for about 6 years no problem at all, now seems to have created the problem. As luck would have it I cut the small loom which goes to the light and fitted the same plug to the new and old light unit so a simple unplug, test and problem identified.
Many thanks Mikey and Gelandestrasse for pointing me in the right direction. Now for the MOT.
