it only happens when it's not put back on properly
mostly when owners been exploring/fixingthe front screw/clip is a wee bit finicky to fit properly, if not you get air brakes

Yep Mine to! N/S panel fliped back, stayed connected on the back two clips stopped bent it back, still same.
I had fitted a Zumo and had removed and refitted the panel, thought it was my lazy refitting of the clips, did not try against warranty then or since, at the time it was a couple of months out, but thought I was the problem. Mmm!

Changed the fixing on mine for a cam lock.

This 'sidepanel flies away' feature was only on 2004-2007 bikes, and was corrected by BMW somewhere in production 2007. If you're worried, you can ask dealer to replace the plastic bolt by metal. In this picture of inside of RHS panel it's evident.

Having heard of this problem earlier, I have replaced the lower plastic fasteners with dzus, similar to those on the other mounting points. No problems yet, but I haven't ridden the bike since I fitted them as it is still hidden under the shiny new cover I got as a Christmas present.
