Side stand cut out switch

The only thing that really annoys me about the GS is that the sidestand cuts out the engine even when in Neutral (I take it this is normal) - i.e. its unlike nearly all other bikes where it only cuts out if you're in gear and try and to use the side stand.

Given there is a Netutral light on the dash - it shouldn't be too hard to re-wire the cut out to make use of this - worst case I'd have to add a relay into the electrics.

Before I start playing - has anyone done this mod?

To by-pass the cut out, just trace the wiring harness back to the plug (should be a fairly large connector under the seat, left hand side) and bridge the connection with a thin piece of wire. This will allow the connector to snap back together without a problem.

I have done this on my 1100, it works fine and is very convenient.

A word of warning though, the bike WILL start if it's still in gear...but none of us are that stupid, are we? :)

Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but it might help.

If you need any more info or pictures, just let me know.

Yes, some pictures or drawings will be more than usefull. Also, do you know were the actual switch is? mine seems to be playing games cuting off the engine when shifting gears. it happens ocasionally but as expected at the wrong moment.

The side stand switch dissapeared from GS's whith the introduction of the 1150, but strangelly enough is still there for other models like the cruiser and the K's. german logic?

Yosi,

The plug is on the left side and as soon as the seat is removed it is very visible.

To by-pass the switch I just used a piece of bell wire to go across the male part of the plug. I formed the two ends to fit by wrapping around a small Allen key (hopefully the picture will show what I mean).
You don't need too much or else the connector will not snap closed again.

This is probably sounding more complicated than it is but it really does only take about five minutes to do.

The actual switch on my bike ('97 1100) is immediately below the sidestand pivot bolt.
Some people disconnect this and solder the two wires together to achieve the same as putting a jumper across the connector.

Hope this is useful to you but if not, just ask again.
