Side stand deployment?

Have collected my 78 R100RS following recommissioning.

This was a new to me purchase last year.

I have always used the side stand whilst astride all my previous bikes, before dismounting.

However, the RS is a challenge, for the flimsy OE stand requires more than the norm 50 or so degrees for full deployment.

Even using the toe of my boot, I struggle to get close to full deployment due to my leg being in contact with the lower faring - so it has been more luck than judgement thus far.

Other than dismounting first, am I missing the obvious?

Thanks

The obvious being that it was never intended to be operated whilst seated on the bike, which is pretty daft but not unusual.

There are a few aftermarket options available which do allow you to deploy the stand whilst seated or some people have welded a leg onto the original stand to simplify deployment when seated.

I had the same problem. I solved it by getting the stand as far forward as I could, then putting a bit of weight on it by leaning the bike slightly, feet on the ground roll the bike back 6 inches. Job done. Off you hop!

Congrats on the RS by the way. It's great to hear of an RS being recommissioning rather than chopped into someone's horrendous bobber vision.

I'm envious, enjoy it.

I've seen people welding a loop onto it. The loop emerges behind the lh carb. It makes things a little easier.

Thank you. As expected the brakes are not great compared to modern braking systems. I think the rear would benefit from a new disc as the original is a little scored and sintered pads all round. Otherwise, for a 44 yr old machine I have been very pleasantly surprised. I consider myself very fortunate and have owned many BMW’s K11, K12, K13, K16 and am on my 4th GSA also. People come up to me to talk to me about the airhead. They did not any of the others - apart from a lady in France who asked to use one of my polished GSA panniers as a mirror to put on her make up……

On mine i just had the feeling that sooner or later i would not get the OE sidestand down fully and i would end up with the bike falling over.

So ive now got the Migsil , its a bit expensive but works really well.

If you are on Brembos, ditch the sintered HH pads when you come to renew them. EBC Organic are every bit as good, wet or dry, and don't wear the discs out.

The rear disc brakes on late 1970’s RS models are shite, they were shite from new. :D

:D My CS is 1981 with Brembo fronts.. and a drum rear. I thought I had a drum on the RS too, that also had Brembo twin fronts. The rear drum isn't much cop either. I might try winding the adjuster up a bit.

Lowering a later airhead down on the side stand while on the bike is a leap of faith thing. You push it as far forward as you can (which doesn't take it to the stop) and while holding it there with your left leg let the bike tip over to the left.

Beware if you fit an aftermarket side stand that sits closer to the rider. I bought a paralever GS with one, and if you deployed both stands at once (cleaning the bike, usually) you had to be careful to fold the main stand up before the side stand.

If you do it in the wrong order, the main stand can't retract fully. You find out when you hit your first left hand bend.

Jon, out of interest who recommissioned the bike? Did you do this yourself. I've a few problems recommissioning a 1977 R100RS and would like to chat with someone relatively local
