Side stand switch issue, or maybe worse? Tricky problem.

Something else to try

D Cool over on ADV Rider has suggested that I check out the clutch switch which is number 16 in this diagram.

I will have a look tomorrow night and see if it is intact.

Clutch switch sounds a good bet, colis would affect it running at all as it's ok in neutral this rules them out. Does it start with the clutch pulled in? or when in neutral does this cut it out? if not can't see it being the switch.

I've had bikes that wouldn't run above 2k-3k revs, but they didn't stop running like your bike.

On those bikes it was the TPS.

It won't start whilst in gear with the clutch pulled in Dave which makes me think that the clutch switch is at least worth looking at. :thumb2

I'm hoping that it's not the TPS Neil, so am working my way step by step through the easier (and cheaper) possible solutions first in the hope that somewhere along the way I'll find the problem. :)

I have a spare TPS in the garage if you need it, provided its the same as the 1100 one, let me know and I will pop it in the post.

That's very decent of you Stewart, thank you. :bow

I will exhaust as many possibilities as I can before I move on to the TPS so I may well be in touch, but in the nicest possible way I hope I won't. :)

Maybe Steptoe will know if the 1100 and 1150 TPS units are the same.

I have a spare 1150 TPS but you can check it's working to some extent.

Use a volt meter between terminals 1 and 4 turn the ign on. this is your base setting (I use .371)....slowly open the throttle and the voltage should change evenly as you do so.

Back home and have one here :D :D :D You can collect off Max at HG if you want I'll not be down till weekend but you will need a multimeter

We can do quickly if you have

Feck.

Thanks lads. :o :thumb2

I'll try the "simpler" stuff first tonight and see where we are then.

I can get my hands on a multimeter Jay, but haven't a feckin clue about setting a TPS. It will be good to learn. :)

That's not nice you'll be there one day. my mum thinks I'm good and told me to tell you Bollxxx , now what about another curry night Surbiton again? I can use my bus pass!!!.
Dave ( I'm an old fart and proud of it!!) GS.

Checked the clutch switch tonight and all is well with it.

Jaythro tells me to put everything back to standard so with that in mind I will try Sherlocks tomorrow to see if they have a side stand and side stand switch in stock.

I will leave the TPS and coils until I have tried the above. One thing at a time. :)

I think there a big hint here to what maybe an issue ?

I could be talking pish but does the side stand switch not have a diode in it ? if you've just shorted out the switch maybe you've by-passed the diode ? causing an electrical funny

I don't have a electrical diag handy to check

I see what you mean Roddy, but the puzzling thing is that the bike went across the States in June with the sidestand switch bypassed. I'll be on to Sherlocks this morning though to see if I can get a sidestand and a switch.
