I was doing the weekly clean on my 2018 GS Exclusive today with it on the center stand and noticed there was side to side play (twisting movement anchored at the top and bottom of the shock) on the entire rear shock ESA unit. It's been solid since I've had it so it seems something has worked loose. The ride to the dealers is about 12 miles on fast roads, so would you recommend calling BMW assist to pick it up? It's surely not safe to ride?

Cheers

My 2016 GSA used to do that apparently it normal!! dont panic yet!!

When you say twist do you mean that the spring twists round a little about an inch or 2 when you twist it around if so that is totally normal.

Its mounted both ends on 'Rose joints' by design, they can all be moved from new - its by design

No, it's the entire unit. There is play from the top and bottom pivot points of the shock (see the red marks on the attached image). If I hold the black ESA housing, i can move the entire unit as one and the play is where I have marked. It never did it before, so not sure why it is so loose now. I would of surely noticed it in the last year if it was normal.
