Been looking through the threads to see if its been discussed before.....crikey,do you know how many pages there are on the forum?

Anyway I am looking at doing some long distance stuff next year, and quite fancy doing it in silly weather like snow and ice.....which is great except for my biking nemesis being riding on snow and ice ( said nemesis being just higher than riding in deep sand as I found out on my Aussie tour )

Solution has presented itself from browsing through the mad Viking biker photo's in the form of a sidecar.

Looking at really just carrying capacity for fuel/wheels/spares etc and not having to heavily modify my 100gspd( so being able to use it as a normal bike when not out hunting Yeti's).Even though the passenger carrying cockpit types of sidecar are great,I am possibly right in thinking that they are expensive....and it would be nice to have one,but not essential for my use.

Anybody had one or who could offer advice.....might even try to build one myself, who knows?

Andy

Hi Andy!

I love my sidecar, and I love the one I'm riding these days too. (BMW and Ural.)
-Have you asked members of a sidecar club for advice?
I guess there is hope here; http://www.sidecars.org.uk/links.html

About putting the sidecar on and off and rebuild:
If you want the sidecar&bike together to be ok to ride you better rebuild the front (fork and wheel) a lot. But you do not HAVE to.
And you need to make the frame of the bike stronger.
I guess the tires for bikes are more expensive then the type for cars, so it might be a good idea to rebuild all wheels to car type.

When you put the sidecar on your bike, keep in mind that sometimes you need to fix things on the sidecarside of the bike - make an easy way to remove a part of the sidecar or make a hole for your arms. (-Do you understand what I try to tell you? My english could be better, I'm sorry.)

And find out what the law in your country say about rebuilding to sidecar, but ask the sidecar clubs for advice first.

Sidecars over here are on the right side of the bike, so before you buy one find out if that is a good or bad idea for your tour.

You mentioned snow, so here's pictures that might give you an idea of what you need: http://www.eurofoto.no/show_album.php?aid=2210815 = people from Denmark going to Norway in February, sleeping in tent in snow.

...and a movie for you! http://www.mc24.no/article.php?articleID=1770&categoryID=96

The girl wearing a red hood here http://www.mc24.no/article.php?articleID=1528&categoryID=96 is me!

-A lot of things to find out, but you can do it!
Hopefully our members Grumpy Lee and Tarka can help you!

Best luck! :thumb2

Thanks to you all for the replys..

Very helpful and a load of information from LIV,its going to take a while to read up on that all.

Even a second hand Ural unit could be the way to go,in some fetching world war II paint scheme....that way I could go out in my gasmask and german helmet and people would think that I am going to a show, rather than exercising my special hobby.
