Silly Question About Going Beyond the Service Due Date

I've had my second hand 2013 R1200GS TE since April (bought from a dealer) and for various reasons only done around 700 miles. Now the service due warning has come on as its due on 16th October or 3000 miles but I'm off for a weeks touring in Spain on 17th October. I would prefer to delay the service until I get back but apart from the Service warning being displayed all the time does it doing anything else like go into a "safe" mode? Does the general warning light also stay on all the time?
 
You will get no problems with the bike, it is just a warning light, you will just have to put up with it till you have the service
 
If you have an extended warranty on the bike then you risk invalidating that by missing the yearly service. You don't want to have to claim for something on your week away and find you're not covered!
 
Pop into the dealer and ask them to reset it.
When they say No, I would question why it has come on only 5 months and 700 miles into ownership.
I would like to think they serviced it before they sold it to you, or at least made you aware then that it would be due in a few months time!
It should come on annually or when approaching 6000 miles since last serviced?
What does the stamp in your service book say?

I wasn't too impressed with the dealer as there were a couple of things he omitted to tell me and I must admit I though that I wouldn't need to get it serviced until after a year. Tempted to give them a ring but if I'm honest I would rather not use them as I don't have any confidence in them.

I agree with above. Any s/h BMW I have ever bought from a dealership had all service for the next 6000 miles and annual done earlier than required so that I have the maximum time and mileage. JJH

Yes, it was a BMW dealership and I will give them a ring but based on past experience I get the feeling they won't be too bothered .......

Well worth pursuing, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I bought a very nice used RT from a dealer north of myself. As they were not local, when it's service was due I took it to my local BMW dealer. They pointed out that it had not had the valve checks and a few other bits done when it should have been. They even called the supplying dealer to confirm this for me. I then E-mailed the supplying dealer with BMW customer services CC'd.
They called to apologise, and then sent a cheque to cover the service items that were missed.
Basically, great service from everybody. OK, it should not have happened, but these things do and it how they put them right that matters.

It could be that they simply forgot to reset the service indicator? Either way, it would be worth a call (or email as you have it all in writing then). As you still have 18 months warranty remaining, its best to make sure your service history is in order :thumb

I find this all a bit confusing considering that they carried out an MOT on the bike even though it wasn't required until October but not the service ....

I did check that the warranty wouldn't be effected if I delayed the service until my return and provided the millage hasn't been exceeded i.e. 6000 miles since the last service check it should be OK.

Their used bike charter states that any bike needing a service within 1000 miles will have it done. Is the service due an annual one or a mileage one?

Their response does suggest it's just an annual service and therefore the service reminder wasn't reset. Personally I'm surprised they didn't do this when you bought the bike.

The last service was carried out on 16/10/15 @ 8932 miles and the current millage is 11420 of which I have added around 700, so its an annual service. But I do find it strange that they carried out an MOT six months earlier that it was needed so it would last a year and yet not carry out a service?

Putting a fresh mot on a bike is a cheap way of getting a bike checked over and adding value.
Servicing costs money and, if the service wasn't due, it's wasted money.

Just the logic that confuses me - the reason for the MOT was so I didn't have to get it done for a year of ownership but I still had to get it serviced so I could have got the MOT then?

I think you're being too critical of the dealer to be fair. I bought my bike second hand from a dealer last October. It was due its annual service in july this year. I think the dealer got the bike via part ex in July and did a service when they got it. They're not likely to do it again when it finally gets sold.
It could be the same with your bike, they may have had it since October.
MOT is different in that it makes you think you have 12 moths worry free motoring.

If your warranty is ok with you doing it later then do that, personally I'd get it serviced before my big trip.
