I must of been living under a log, I did not have that new tunnel on my radar, well that makes an extra way to escape the peninsular.

The Rotherhithe Tunnel and Tower Bridge are both toll free.

I have no great problem with the charge and am happy that they have built the Silvertown Tunnel to take the pressure off the very out of date Blackwall Tunnel.

I’m already registered for ‘Auto Pay’ for the Congestion Charge, which means that I don’t have to do anything, other than register my motorcycles, which didn’t need to be registered.

All joking and moaning apart, the congestion charge does make you hesitate. I had to go to Guildford today. To drive would take me through the congestion charge. Home to Waterloo was free, as was the train journey as far as Surbiton from Waterloo. An off-peak day return from Surbiton to Guildford was £7.30 ie. under half the congestion charge fee. It was also quicker by public transport. I walked back from Waterloo to home, a couple of miles. I also walked the two miles from Guildford Station to Motolegends, though they were kind enough to give me a lift back to the station.


PS I say “Had to”; it was entirely voluntary.

I need to check where the congestion charge starts as I sometimes bring my car over but only ever as far as Canary Wharf

I did exactly the same trip as Wappers mentioned above and although had to pay full rail fare from Caanry Wharf to Guildford, by public transport it was miles quicker than by car round the M25 from the Dartford bridge and then back to Canary wharf. Even walked the same miles from station to Motolegends but was lazy on the way back and got the bus

I doubt I’d be using this tunnel but having seen it grow since they started it ( passing by every week on the DLR) I always wondered when it would start working. It will be a big deal for those coming from south of the river. The Blackwell tunnel is a nightmare

Don't love the charge for Blackwall too, but can obviously live with it. I'm on Autopay team too.
To be fair if they added the charge for Silvertown only it would have created havoc at Blackwall...

At least now we have another option to cross as traffic would generally grind to a halt if Blackwall is blocked as Rotherhithe tunnel is a joke as a fallback

Even considering the bus lane, isn't this a tiny bit small?
Is the terrain under the thames (serious question) complex or too "soft" to dig for bigger structures?

You would think something like this would be on the news for months when it was being built?

I think that might be to accommodate the large number of lorries, that pass through for the multiple building sites, stretching east from Silvertown.

I wonder if the addition of a non motorcycle use bus lane is to deter the kamikaze flat out filterers? Plenty of fines to collect if they cross the white line making progress..
