Simple remedy to an 1150/1200 servo problem.

Well at least I didn't keep the no cost removal secret to myself......thought this was supposed to be a support forum...theres still plenty of work to be had all round...

Dave H:mad::mad::mad:

I think Steptoe has paid all dues necessary.

I believe some one has nicked his idea before and passed it off as their own (heard a story about head guards being sold in another country).

Could be tosh but after I saw someone with steptoe head guards and asked him if he knew neil I was told they were imported :(

:D:D

That made me laugh. It's the other way around. But i only made them after stanton stopped making them, but i was always being asked for them. If he was still making them i wouldn't have made my mine.

Of course. But it serves a simple purpose.

Those that bad mouth me get ignored if they ever post for help with this particular problem, those that are ok get helped :D :D:D

I've always said Mr Harrison looks younger and more handsome by the day, no woder he's such a hit with all the girls.:augie

If I see a post by Steptoe in the help section I usually have a read. It's either helpful or witheringly funny:D If i was nearby I would pay a visit for some of the oracle set up work for 11's.

Always helpful, no bullshit guides and keeping it simple.

At least Steppers has a money saving possible fix for these probs, unlike many a dealers "new bit" theory. Been there, heard and seen that!:thumb2

I'm still deciding whether to post up the pictures and "a how to cure it". Simple enough reason, other people/business making money out of my hard work.
It sounds like you'd prefer that other companies not profit from what you would give away, rather than not profiting yourself.

That's sure a good notion Neil, and I'm with you on it, but it may not be doable.

Kudos for your continued research!

Hello Steptoe,
Have you had any further thoughts on whether to make your easy fix available to the masses?
I am faced with having to remove my servo/abs to get my GSA reliable again even though the fault is now sometimes intermittent. I also have the slightly dragging rear brake too…
I really like having ABS (though could do without the servo...) and it seems a shame to loose it over what might be an easy fix. I’m over 500 miles away from you or I’d bring the bike to you for repair and servicing, but I would be willing to pay you whatever you consider reasonable to pass on your information as a pm?
Thanks

My 2006 model GS is due for a new ABS modulator in a couple of days. BMW are providing the part but I pay a lot for the labour to fit it. The problem is an intermittent high pressure detected in the rear brake circuit (according to the dealer diagnostics and the red flashing lights). Whilst I am intrigued by the idea that Steptoe has a fix for the problem (and he's entitled to earn his living from it if it works) I would want a very good idea of what the fix was before riding 200 miles to see him and another 200 miles home. My own opinion, based on 30 years in the electronics and industrial automation industries, is that either a pressure sensor inside the unit has failed or there is a piece of swarf stuck inside. As far as I can tell the 1150 and 1200 units are different so how one fix suits both is something of a mystery to me.

Electrically they are (slightly) different, but mechanically they are basically the same.

Anyway the fix isn't to do with the electrical part of the system.

And, as i've stated, it may only be a cure for a small percentage, it's not a miraculous fix for all servo problems. I've fixed two, but more interestingly i've purposely introduced the same problem on both 1150 and 1200 bikes using the same failed part which is common to both servo units. :D

After 30 years in the trade why aren't you probing the workings of the servo unit yourself ? :augie:D

Steppers you sir are one clever fucker, Ugly but clever :rob

neil you dispence more knowledge here for feck all than anybody so holding a little back for your own gain is not a bad thing:thumb2

Let's be honest here. If I, or probably 75 per cent of the people on this site, have a problem with the servo or the brakes generally then the bike is going to end up on the doorstep of Steptoe or a similar professional spanner wielder.

There is little advantage to Steptoe publishing this information more widely as it's only going to be of use to other people in the same line of work who aren't willing or able to do the same investigation of the problem.

I'm sure, if you are one of the 23 per cent of site visitors who are able and willing to put in the work on your own bike, and hit a problem with your servo, then a PM to Steptoe asking for a hint would probably get an answer. The answer might be "feck off" but you'll probably get an answer.

If you are one of the remaining 2 per cent doing this work professionally then the same applies, although the answer might more likely be "feck off and work it out yourself, you cnut".

Nice to know that there's a possible solution in case I have a problem, and that Steptoe knows what that solution is.

Here's hoping, but I've heard nothing so far from the one I sent last week...... :bow

Don't worry your not alone - I have pages of Pm's and emails (about all sorts of problems, not just abs) it's finding the time to do in my free time what i'm doing all day.

I need to switch off at the end of a day, so they tend to get answered in large batches when i have my technical head on.

Problems get answered quicker when posted in the forum, as it may help others with similier problems, which in turn means less PM's and emails :D

But please don't stop the PM's, some of them are a great source of amusment and may appear in my forthcoming book of technical questions and answers . :D:thumb

Right, quick break over, back to work. An 1200GS, 1150ADV and an 1100RT all waiting for me for various jobs.

Keep the info to yourself Neil .... you've done the R&D so to speak....

... but can i 'buy' the info that may cure my dragging rear brake on a R1150R first :D:D:nenau

Steptoe,

You could create a library of instructions in PDF format.

As an example, I used yr instruction detailing how to change fork seals quickly and easily a while back; very helpful, and a good quality easy to understand document.

If this was held as a PDF and sold for a fiver a download then I would have paid for it.

I couldn't agree more!

I'd happily pay for them knowing you know what you know

Think you might have a money maker there...

Unfortunately before you could blink, someone would have done a copy 'just for a mate' and it would be flying round the Internet and be on file sharing sites. And of course scumbags would be reselling it on ebay.

If your bike is broken, take it to him, he'll fix it, you pay him money for it, he can pay his mortgage, buy hardcore porn etc.

I don't think you'd scrape much of a living selling pdfs of your trade secrets!

yea but he's at least worth £5.99

As Steptoe always says there's no need to make a meal out of it.
