I rode my R850R on Friday and Saturday and couldn't help but miss that little piece of gadgetry. And I noticed how much notchier the gearbox is on the smaller-engined bike, and how much heavier it is (238kg) despite being so much smaller than the GS.

Owning them both, and riding them back to back, shows how far BMW have come with the 1200GS.

ah, another viewpoint:

I had both for a while too, until somebody relieved me of the R850 without my permission.

don't you find that the low centre of gravity on the R850 makes it hilarious for hooning around in town at low speed.... and the extra weight makes it feel very sure footed.
 
Yes, I've noticed I actually use that too. I've always laughed at people who get those fitted. Much like heated grips in fact which came as a big surprise to me. They keep your hands warm! Who knew?

Nah the 850 is just a much better built bike made of propoer metal and not accountant inspired plastic weight saving excercise AKA 1200GS !!!
