Sky HD box problem

Our Sky+ box is on the blink so my son gave me his old Sky HD box.
Plugged it in everything works apart from it will ONLY show HD channels. Thought it might let you watch in none HD if you don't have HD package.

have you phoned sky and got your viewing card paired to the new box?

The box will work fine for none HD channels and in fact you will get the free HD channels without the extra HD subscription.
