I have only had my 1150GS for a few weeks. Its an 02 plate with 16000 miles. When I start it from cold and use the "choke" the engine makes a slight knocking/tapping noise and goes when I take the "choke off".
Any ideas?

they all do that sir !

Chill. This is a prehistoric engine you're starting. Takes a while for the oil to circulate everywhere.
:aidan

And if you park her on side stand, she may well smoke on start up.;)

whining gearboxes,

flashing warning lights,
dodgy handling (worn tyres)
dodgy handling (all the other stuff)

oil types etc etc

Just settle in have a look around and you will soon fit right in.

not much use am I:blast

Yup. They do - as the man says - all do that sir. Fret not. Buy earplugs. Smile a lot.

And never buy a m/guzzi :D

Blimy, we're getting some black rats on here these days ;)

"Don't forget, you're sitting on an engine.'' From an uber mechanic I once knew.

Some 'bikes with certain fairings are like loudspeaker cones. Sending all the the clattering noise towards you. At least it's not like that. :rob

That sounds bl**dy awful. I used to have a Cali III, albeit one with a full fairing. It never sounded that rattly and whiney. Sold it in the end because, following a collision in France it was off the road for 8 months waiting for bits on the infamous Italian "back order" system. Even when the bits arrived one of the fork legs wasn't right. Shame really, as it handled much better than the contemporary BMW airheads.

Funny! That doesn't happen with both my boxers, a 78 R100 and a 01 1150Gs.

Waitaminute!!!!!!

I live in the Tropics where its 30deg Centigrade most of the time and Heated Handle grips are not offered as an option!!

Knock knock

Never start a GS without earplugs!, easiest way to scare yourself to death!. If it's only been around the clock once it aint even run in yet!.
Dave GS (you want to scare yourself start a Vincent twin, even earplugs won't hide the rattle!)

GS1100/1150 alarming noises 101:

My 1100's first few gear changes after a cold start sound like a woodchipper eating a bottle. Been like that for 10 years.

You may also hear a soft, mosquito-like whine at idle when the engine's warm - that's the fuel pump. It probably does it when the engine's cold too, but I wouldn't know because of the bag-of-spanners-in-a-tumble-dryer cold idle noise.

The occasional CHA-CHUNK! from the front wheel as you get rolling from stationary is either the ABS arming/rearming itself, or your forgotten disk lock putting some hurt on your wallet.

Rolling the throttle off quickly from high speed may cause an occasional exhaust backfire, which doesn't go bang, but makes an embarassing CHUFF! noise. The first time it happened to me, it sounded a bit like all the air leaving the rear tyre in a big hurry

Once the engine's warm and you have your lid on, the GS sounds like a well-oiled sewing machine. It may not be a classically butch bike engine noise, but if you ride all day, it's actually strangely comforting.

HTH, and enjoy your new bike and learning its character!

What a nice problem to have! ;)
