Joker - you still out there? Just in case you missed this.

I just posed this on the k-bikes site. I friend of mine just had a dyno done on his bike and he's set up just like me (BMW K1200R - full Remus Ti and evo air filters). The results are impressive -

Going by what gets published by Motorcyclist magazine here are some comparisons. Raffy is on the top just to make it easy. These are the bikes we are most often compared to. Some are nakeds some are litre bikes. Sorry this doesn't line up so straight but...

Bike____________HP_________Torque

Raffy___________153.1_______94

BMW K1200R___141.1_______83.5 --- stock Check out the difference!!!
Aprilia Tuono___114.0_______66.8
Ducati 999R____139.0_______79.6
Ducati S4R______108.8______66.5
Harley V-Rod____109.3______74.3
Honda 919______102.9______65.1
Honda 1000RR___148.6______76.4
Honda RC51______118.5______72.1
Kawi Z1000______125.1______68.9
Kawi ZRX_________112.8______79.6
Kawi ZX 10R______163.4______80.4
Kawi ZX12R_______161.4______91.3
Kawi ZZR_________145.2______87.1
MV Brutale_______106_______51.1
Suzuki 'Busa______156.1______99
Suzuki GSX 1000__150.4_____77.2 an '04
Suzuki SV1000____111.2_____70.7
Truimph S3_______119.8______73.4
Yamaha FZ1______128.5______73.8
Yamaha R1_______158.3_______74

All in all I'ld say look out for Raffy! Look how close his numbers are to a 'Busa.

I'm impressed - BIG time.
When your rain stops and the salt is removed from your roads - you'll be having a blast on your new K1200R :clap

:nono In standard trim it doesn't match (15bhp less) the 'busa. :dabone :dabone

True but there are no other nakeds that are anywhere close. I still think BMW did a great job with this engine for their "first" attempt at making serious power.

Trouble????

Agree. Seems the sensible approach to me. Why wring the last ounce out of a tiny engine making it inflexible, difficult to manufacture and expensive when you can achieve the same result from simply making it a bit bigger? Thats whats daft about 600's and why Kawa, Triumph and Ducati make bigger engines in that class.

What utter bollox! You think a 'busa is inflexible, difficult to manufacture and more expensive? What planet are you on?

Considering what BMW manage to wring out of a normally aspirated M3, or M5, I'd expect them to easily develop an engine with big power and big torque. I'm surprised its taken this long. All they need to work on now to seriously contend with the japs and ducatis of this world is lighter weight.
Don't get me wrong, I've always found heavier bikes to make better road machines, but specs and race wins sell bikes in the speed-merchant market and in this respect BMW have a long way to go considering their first attempt at a reasonably fast machine was the K1200RS back in 1997-odd, and that did not ruffle too many oriental feathers.....
From what I've heard, its as good a bike as the Busa and Zzr in terms of comfort and build, and only rider preference will be the deciding factor as I think it is now a realistic contender, but I'm sure BMW had the potential for something like this ages ago. It just seems that the design philosophy for the car and bike depts were two very different things.....

The bike develops quite a bit more horsepower per litre than the M3 does, or at least the M3 that I could find the spec of.

BMW tried to go down this route once before when they first brought out the brick and attempted to do away with the airheads. Their trad customers didnt like it one bit - just like the trad HD customer dont thing much of HD's latest. Yes, the marketing philosophy of the car and bike bits of BMW are different - there is no traditional BMW car design as such and in any case car buyers arent so wedded to engineering style as bike buyers.

It will be interesting to see what buyers make of the bike. If I wanted that sort of bike I would probably go for the Jap equivalent, because of price and quality. Just like I would go for a Jap 1200GS if they made one.
