Why has my broadband connection become so slow?

Over the past week it got slower and slower!

Pages are taking an age to download!

Tiscali are my provider, but I've never experienced this before!

Any ideas?

Paul...there could be several reasons.......check your cache for a start...it may be stuffed full which can slow things down.

Do a full virus scan too.....some viruses use your bandwidth to send stuff outwards or do other naughty things......

Check with Tiscali as well..they may have a service issue and most BB suppliers have a recorded message service to inform customers....no idea what the number is for Tiscali but it should be easy 'nuff to find.

Check THIS site as well....it has a load of very usefull tools to diagnose and monitor BB connections.....use it before you call a Tiscali tech number so that you have the relevant info and faults reported before you start speaking to them.

HTH
:)

Thanks!

Went to cache and made it bigger!

Didn't want to delete stuff because I would have no idea what I would be deleting!!!!!

Its working fine now though, Thanks!

I've opened up this old thread as I'm really getting fed up with my PC.

I'm using BT Wireless Broadband and it is currently slower than dial up!
Pictures take ages to open, and I've given up trying to download anything.

It has a 270GHz processor and 504MB of ram. I had the motherboard and power supply replaced last week, but it was slow before then too.

Seems to be ok offline, so I'm assuming it's an internet problem. I've tried running a virus check, disk cleanup etc but no change.

Any ideas before I chuck it out the window into the garden??

Delete any old files and programs you no longer want.
Defrag the drive.
Run a free online scan from Trend microhouse
Run something like Spybot S & D
download and run another free proggy called Crap Cleaner, especially on 'issues', but agree to do the backup it suggests.

Are you using an ADSL modem or a router and what BB speed are you on with BT ?

Did you replace the MoBo and PSU just because it was slow.....?

The pc started locking up and had to be restarted by switching on and off. It then gave up completely and was put in for repair and those were the parts that was needed. It was getting slow before it went wrong though.

I've got an ADSL modem and I was told when the line was tested, it would take a speed of 5.5 whatever - sorry I'm not technical.:nenau

If I hover over the wireless icon it says connection speed - 54.0 Mps.

I don't usually pay attention to the Norton scan when it pops up, but I think it would usually run through circa 140,000 items in about 1/2 an hour. Last night it took 2.5 hours to hit 10,000.

The machine is no more than 18 months old.

OMG ! You should have mentioned you're infested with Norton before.

I don't know how many more times we have to say it.....BIN IT !

Get something like AVG free or Avast free instead. Your 'puter should fairly gallop along afterwards :)

If you have a Speedtouch modem or similar, something like Dr Speedtouch usually come with it and should show what ISP download speed is. The 54 Kbps is just a Windoze marker and relatively meaningless since it's incapable of registering any higher speed !

I have same problem with Tiscali Broadband seems to have got slower since Norton subscription lapsed, have just installed AVG free 7.5. What should I do with Norton, remove it or turn off?. With the AVG there is no firewall should I pay for this as extra to AVG or is there anything free that would do?. Also should mention I have AD-Aware installed do I still need this with AVG?.
Sorry so many questions ,thanks

Rip Norton out with extreme prejudice !
Download and run the free firewall Zonealarm and keep adaware, it complements any Antivirus. :)
