Might be new battery time ;)

The TC did not like the cold weather today, and took a lot of revolutions' before it jumped into life

Bit surprised the motobatt hasn't lasted as long as last time (18 months) , but it has had a hard life (lots of short runs )

I'm semi torn between putting the Noco back in, great battery, but its the potential low temp non charging side of things that puts me off

The odyssey, was good, but tbh i didn't see an advantage over the motobatt..

or do i look at the hybrids

anyone run a hybrid in cold weather ??

Mart, you need to message Paul (BigCats) as he and I both run hydrids but he uses his bike daily whereas mine is currently a garage queen until my elbow is healed.

You could always buy a Noco lithium booster pack and fit the dedicated jumper lead. Makes using the booster easy on the bike (no panels to undo) and handy for all vehicles not just the bike.

I always leave the bike on an intelligent charger (motobatt battery) as due to the tracker it would not stand a chance of starting after a few days.
so as soon as the bike goes in the shed the charger is plugged in.
I have nearly been stranded away from home on freezing days so always carry a Lidle Ultimate speed jump starter pack in the top box, I was a little sceptical about these for under 50 quid but claim to start a 2 litre diesel ??.
One day went to my pick up 3 litre diesel, starter solenoid clicked that was it I new the battery was on its las legs, perfect opportunity to test this little jump pack but probably expecting too much.
Connected it to the battery with the short leads and croc clips supplied and it started with no effort, so the jump pack lives in the top box even through the summer as it can also be used to charge the phone etc,

yuasa yumicrom or yuasa yumicrom cx would always be my go to for batteries expensive yes but very reliable.

Just a thought for you. If you're running the bike with 20/50, this alone will make it sluggish to start at 0° or less... If you are using it, by the same token let it run on idle for a minute or so before giving it any throttle.

But yes, the battery might also be a detail!

The OEM battery on my 12RT lasted several years. Tayna sell it as an Exide if I remember correctly?

if you are doing mainly short journeys, is the battery topped up? I don't have an Optimate connected to my bike, parked outdoors, so if I have not been using the bike much I might need to top up the battery once or twice in winter.

Motobatt sealed AGM battery

Intersting shout re oil & temp

When it kicked itself into like i let it idle for about 20 mins whilst i went and chipped the wife's car out of its slumber

When i wen back it was on 2 bars for oil temp so warmer than cold ;)

got my gear on and left 10 mins after that - sluggish once again

Battery or starter are my thoughts

I will charge the battery tonight and see what tomorrow brings -

Battery is the cheaper easier option - starter is a weekend jobby

When my Hexhead became a reluctant starter, I stripped the starter motor down and cleaned up the commutator, checked the brush pack (all fine) then cleaned and regreased the planetary gears with some Silkolene red racing grease. It massively improved its willingness to turn over.

Probably two hours work at a methodical pace.

So sluggish to start on the way home, so dug out the noco charger and set it agm, and turned it on

Uh oh, one red light so very low charge... Then the second lit so it was taking a charge, went and grabbed the old motobatt & noco batteries from the shed, and brought them back indoors to charge next, and went back to check the bike

Lo and behold a big green light flashing at me

Ive left it for half an hour, and ill check the voltages

Starter is looking like the culprit

So Motobatt on the bike charged is showing 13.79 v

Backup Motobatt, charged is showing 13.30v

Noco Lithium charged is showing 13.50v

Looked at the starter - its a Bosch

prices are similar for replacement units Valeo or Bosch or arrowhead or refurb

i seem to recall you could swap units , the only caveat being the plastic cover wouldnt fit the bosch unit die to its overall length

can anyone confirm if i can fit any make

its a 2011 TC

A 2011 shouldn’t have a plastic cover, only the ‘04 to ‘07 models IIRC.

Yes your right, but they only list the bosch as a fitment for the 11 plate. But mworks list just about everything will fit the 11 model

I have a spare Hexhead starter motor brush pack sat here with all my other goodies I put aside for you. Only drama is finding the fucking time to bring them over, what with an elderly mother with dementia and possible bladder cancer plus a few health issues of my own to deal with.

Ahh. With those comments and all the others, definitely looks like battery or starter motor (clutch/Bendix) need some attention.

Just mentioned the oil because I've been aware of this not being helpful when leaving Italy in the winter. Instead I'm now massaging the lithium battery to life, though 5yrs later (or is it 6 now?) that just seems to keep on doing it's job. Can't fault it.

So a little update

Since the battery charge, all seemed well until our last spell of cold weather 2c

So the bike was so slow to turn over and did an extended chug chug chug chug chug chug, to the point i thought it was going to stop , but it caught and started

Rode to work (7 miles) without incident , came out to go home and it span up like a spring chicken and again the ride home was uneventful

This morning it was cold again and it took the usual extended spin up, but started nontheless

This evening went to the GP's surgery on the way back so bout 2 miles of slow speed filtering into the GP's

stopped the bike, went into the surgery, and was out 2 mins later and went to start the bike

chug chug chuuuuuuug nothing (feck feck feck feck)

tried again and it still no go - oh well time to call the RAC

so tried once more , and it was chug chuug chug chuug chugg chugg and it started .. hmmm

Rode the 7 miles home again some stop start trouble free

Got home and turned it off , took my gear off, and went back out to try again

Chug chug chug chug, and it started no issue

Something isnt right, so its either the starter or the battery

I can get a pattern part from Motorworks, for £199 and a new battery for £76 so i may just take the punt and done with,

Ive got a trip imminent, and i dont want to be stranded or miss it

I am going to tell you what I tell everyone

IF it is slow turning over and is struggling ??

JUST STOP!!!

When you don;t have the volts you need the amps and what does amps get you ????

Yes heat and Loads of current surge!!! Electronics do not like surge as you well know

Also have a look for a good ground on the motor The OE one is a really poxy ring connector to the top of the block
