I've a need at work to have 4 or 5 computers logging data during the day and then FTPing the data to a remote site in the evening. The data then gets processed and posted on a Website so I can work with the information.

I need small footprint machines that can be linked to a KVM switch.

The machines do not need to be fantastic spec or have large harddrives but they do need to be able to run Windows and have a network port.

I've even tought about using a small palmtop but have little experience of them.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Have a look on EuroPC they are based in Glasgow and buy a lot of Dell outlet stuff and sell it on cheaper

I'm guessing you're going to be looking for 4 or 5 identical systems, they should be able to help

Laptops?

These are all self contained and small.

Although for data acquisition we use the small Dell optiplexes. If you have MS Teminal Services running on a server then you can use thinclients and they are tiny - about the size of a network switch.

I bought recently an Acer media PC, small footprint and in is absolutely rubbish.

What sort of data are they logging? I presume if you are using a KVM switch only one user will be involved?

Try setting up a single PC to run 4 or 5 VMs using MS Virtual PC :nenau

Look at just about anything with ITX motherboard. May be rather lowly powered but you can pack a lot of computer into a little space. Also they're generally lower powered too, alothugh if I had the option I'd go with Clive's virtual machines.

Acer Veriton 1000 - we have several here at work - they are FAB.

Can stand them on their ends side by side, they don't take up much space at all - we use them for testing our KVM switches.

Asus eeePc or Dell mini 9s wouldn't take up too much space and don't cost the earth either

Are they all local machines (Not out in the field) If so why not use one machine and Vmware or similar and run virtualised OS's?

EDIT - erm as Clive suggested
