Hi Spent a minute or two searching and think I understand that choke is a bit of a misnomer (sp?) and that what it is really is a fast idle lever? Anyway the 1150GS wot I just bought seem not to do what it says in the owners book ie.e 3 positions 1) Start (doesn't stay there) 2) Fast Idle (supposed to stay there) and 3 Normal Running. Mine wont stay in either position and snaps back to off. Is it supposed to stay in the middle position and if so is it a simple fault to fix? Chainsaws, which I have loads more experience of, come off fast idle with a blip of the throttle as do most cars I've driven with (petrol) injection. Is there supposed to be a similar feature.

Any tips and pointers much appreciated.

Mine stays in place but I seldom use it, maybe on very cold days, I then spend the next hour making sure I have closed it, I agree it is at best a fast idle and a blip of the throttle will make no difference to the position of the lever or the idle speed when used.

My 1150GS 'choke' had to be held open for starting in very cold weather then left in fast idle for a the first few mins riding.

If it starts and you then leave it to idle for a minute or 2 then you should be fine.

the responses. I think having read also about cold engine stalls at awkward moments I'll let it warm propperly before moving off. Steady as she goes Captain...... Nice and easy.

:nod
It is handy for keeping the revs up at the first junction when it is cold and wet and I forget and drop it down into first

On mine the position "3" which is all the way to the top is spring loaded. When its icy cold I use this to start and a little bit of throttle gets the engine running nicely.

I hold it there for about 5 secs and then let it return to position two which is not spring loaded. I will leave it there until one bar shows on the oil temp gauge on the rid and then close off completly.

Then keep checking four or five times that it's shut off

ah so!

There is a fault which must be remedied immediately. It doesn't stop in the middle position. All I need now is some destructions....... Off to search the archives again. Unless, of course, some selfless soul had been there, done that?

Cheers again.

I asked for mine to be tightened at the last service as it wouldnt stay in any postion unless held.

The sage in overalls told me.... 'you don't want to do that sir' ... 'best left as it is and used sparingly'

I bowed and withdrew sheepishly.:o

Hooky,
What have I told ya about messing?? If it's not broke don't fix it!
have you found any rattles yet that need fettling? Keep me up to speed as I may have some that need tending to and you the man!

Take it easy.........but keep taking it!

Ey up Stan

Do you know I thought there was a bit of ticking in both top (side?) ends but it was just the injectors firing, like they do, on tickover. An I haven't bin messin'. Honest. Might even get to ride it one of these days!!

The choke lever is held in position 2 by a mechanism inside the choke lever housing on the handlebar. There’s a spring-loaded ball-bearing which slides over the edge of a metal plate, so that the choke lever doesn’t slide back to the ‘normal running’ position until you push it. It sounds like your spring/ball-bearing is seized up, so you need to strip/clean/grease it.

To get to it, remove the left handlebar end weight, and peel back the right-hand end of the rubber handlebar grip to expose the 2 screws underneath which fix the grip onto the handlebar. Remove those screws and slide the grip to the left, as far as the heated-grip wires will let you. You’ll see a hole at the left-hand-side of the choke lever, undo the tiny screw inside that hole until the choke lever lifts off. Then unscrew and slide out the plastic bit that the choke lever fits into. The ball bearing is on the underside of the little plastic block which the choke cable is attached to. As you slide the block out sideways, be prepared for the ball-bearing to fall out and bounce into the corner of the garage, never to be seen again! :blast If the steel plate underneath that block is dry and rusty it’ll make the choke lever feel stiff (as if the cable is sticking), so give it a dab of grease while you’re in there.

That should fix it. :thumb

It's one of my fav habits to keep ckecking it's turned off - by the time I arrive at my destination I've usually convinced myself that's now ok :blast

We're

On our way!

Cheers chaps. :thumb2 Nothing short of perfect is good enough, so I',m fully prepared to be disappointed! I can almost hear the phatwang of bits as they find their freedom. Nothing to lose ('cept the bits) and all to play for.

Ta very much,
