Snorkel for a 2012GSA

Wanted: definitive helpful advice on fitting a snorkel that can be easily removed if not required.

I've googled checked this and other forums and it's a mix of don't ride in water, you don't need one and a curious fetish site that involves attachments that would make Dyson blush.

So does anyone have real experience real advice and guidance?

From what I've seen over the years it is literally a DIY arrangement involving a length of flexible vacuum cleaner hose and a couple of cable ties

I've never come across a proper snorkel kit as such like you can buy for a Land Rover or Toyota etc

I don't suppose there is much of a market for it hence the lack of availability :confused:

I was thinking there would be a part like an OEM elbow joint that fits to the intake and then a recommended smooth bore size and perhaps an idea of if a filter needed to be fitted to the end in some way.

I don't plan to go swimming with it but equally I don't plan to get stuck with water in my bike.
 
The problem as ever would be if you dropped the bike in the water then it wouldn't matter how long or secure your snorkel was or of it had a filter on the end :blast

I remember seeing snorkels with ping pong balls in an end cage to stop water being sucked in by the swimmer :D

Do you know anyone with a 3D printer?
 
I can imagine the Micky-taking if I attach a ping pong ball cage version :) I have a lot of old scuba kit- will have a play.

Riding through water deep enough to really need a snorkel risks dropping the bike and then it wont matter. But riding through 12" deep water looks risky with that forwards facing air intake so a snorkel could be handy with the current floods situation. A cord kill switch will stop the engine if you fall off in deep water. Then all you have to do is pick up the bike and get it started with an exhaust full of water.
You could make something with silicone hose bends and aluminium tube.
 
Or you could stop pretending it's a recycled u-boat and avoid riding through deep water:nenau
 
It would take someone massively more brave / stupid / rich than me to deliberately prepare a bike as big, heavy and expensive as a GS for wading. A 'fall over' is more or less inevitable as you have no clue what you're riding over and if you meet something unexpected you'll end up on your side and drown / hydraulic lock the motor. Even if you don't end up lying down, you'll be dropping the final drive and gearbox oil as the breathers will have sucked a load of water in (unless you fit extended breather hoses - yet more ridiculous faff).

Let's face it, deep down we all know that however they look, unless you're rich, daft or sponsored they're not really proper off-road bikes (or indeed submarines).

As per post 12 if the water is deep enough to need a snorkel you'll have submerged the transmission and final drive which will mean they cool and draw water in. Additionally even 12" of water will be very difficult to cope with if there is a strong current and silt on the road surface. I did once manage to get through a flood that was deep enough that water started to flow over the cylinder heads of my 1150GS, only an inch or two below the air intake. I was about to switch off the negine and push it out when the level started to drop. No current but still a bit scary, especially as it was late at night and I was alone. Dropping the bike and getting stuck under it would have been fatal.

It might not be your thing but some people like taking big bikes offroad - there's quite a lot of current activity using LC8's in more extreme rides/rally's

And how about these guys on boxers - it's deep so not for the faint heated :D

I have wondered about extending the intake on the 1150GS up to the instruments.
 
Is it really that difficult to comprehend that I'm asking about proactive advice.

If I wanted a submarine I'd buy one.

What I want is to know about is what proactive mods can be made to prevent ingress of water on a bike that is criticised for having a low intake.

I Have no intention of going seat deep. I have every intention of continuing to proactively look after my bike and take reasonable measures to protect it.

You're the one in charge of it and you don't 'have' to ride through deep water. I can't conceive of a situation (apart from massively poor judgement) that would compel you to ride through water deep enough to concern you about ingesting water through the intake. And if you go deep enough to cover the hub, you'll be having to empty the final drive and swingarm anyway (together with hall sensor, electrics, etc, etc) - the air intake is the least of your problems. If it's to cope with some sort of 'fear' about flood water then you'll know that the road surface will be full of rocks, debris and other shite that you can't see so you'll more than likely end up on your side anyway.

It's a different matter if you're 'planning' to do deep water crossings but from what you post above you're not, so rather than carry round a load of demountable Hoover hose and hardware and then have to dismantle the bike and dry out all the bits your Hoover hose hasn't protected why not just turn round?

Of all the things that 1200’s are criticised for (unfairly and fairly) and that people get their worry beads out for, in the real world water in the air intake shouldn't be one of them.

I speak from experience about deep water and gs1200's,its not the water ingestion that fucked mine it was the trying to start it without taking the plugs out beforehand, they are tough engines but water will break anything.

Always walk the route before you cross deep water its the only way to really know whats in there and how deep it is.

Or sit in the garage just staring at it and never ride for fear of what could happen:thumby:
