Today I chucked my bike down the road- We have 2 foot of snow up here in the Cairngorm mountains, and I stupidly left my bike out over night, I had to dig it out and unfreeze the lock- cleared some snow to take it round the back to the garage- I had to drive up and over the back of the house and as I came down the hill the other side- the front wheel slid out and the bike sideways for 10 metres- luckily I did not get caught with it- but I have put a long scratch on my heppco gaurds (better them than the cylinder heads!!) i THEN WHEEL-SPAN ALL THE WAY FROM THE GATE TO THE GARAGE IN VERY DEEP SNOW- Does anybody do road friendly knobbly tyres? I know the TKCs are supposed to be good but they dont last- any chunky tyre reccommendations? Anyone else been out in the snow on their GS?

Driving up and over the house is amazing- even without two feet of snow!!
Sorry to hear of your mishap, though. I don't think any tyres would cope with the conditions you describe (ice racers use spiked tyres) so stick to the usual recommendations for your bike. Last time I was in snow on the road was in Northumberland, about five inches of it, but I had my wife as pillion (for the very first time) so we were very steady. Hope the snow doesn't last and you can get back to enjoying those wonderful roads again.

TKCs as far as I remember, or possibly Karoos - that was taken March 2006 so memory a bit hazy :)

I have riden around 12000 km in winter conditions this winter. Two sets of tires, at temperatures ranging from - 15 celcius to - 28 celsius,

Two rules:

1) Studded TKC80. Yes studded. You will have to do it yourself. TKC alone is not enough.
2) Ride standding when on snow over ice.

There are many guys who rides on snow on ADVRider.com. "Artic Riders" in Alaska, me, "Gros Buck", and a guy called "Don't shoot Me" from finland.

PM if you want some pictures. I cannot post picture on this site ...

When I was in Germany beginning of the year I saw a 1200GS with studded tyres. It looked like TKC and on all the knoblies there are small metal pellets inserted.

Looked wicked
