I bet you felt a right twat taking pictures of a petrol pump:tosser

Good effort! Perhaps this finally vindicates Touratech's claim that there are 37 useable litres in a correctly fitted tank? Now all we need is to get inside your tank and find out what's going on.

My latest plan, dropping the pump to the bottom of the tank, has resulted in the fuse blowing as soon as you turn the ignition on. Doh!

Wunderlich supplied the tank,
might be interesting to find out what Wunderlich include
in the fitting kit.

Mystery solved?

Well I finally measured the capacity of my tank - and it's only 38.5 litres! Maybe Elkamet's mould is a bit erratic? On the plus side, I am now using 100% of the fuel thanks to a mod by Pat of Mobitec. Here's my email to Touratech:

------------------------------------------------

Willi,

apologies for not writing in German. Like so many of the English my language skills are terrible. I am writing to you because Touratech UK Ltd told me your English is particularly good.

I am a member of www.ukgser.com and I have asked many of your customers how much of the capacity of the 41 litre tank they are able to use. The answer is always between 33 and 37 litres - frankly many of these customers are irritated by Touratech's claim that 39 is possible. I am sure you have heard about this issue before. We have heard the same thing from American customers at www.advrider.com - in fact from BMW riders all over the world.

I am planning to use my 1150GS (with your tank of course) in the Sahara so I am trying to get the maximum useable capacity. I have found that by detaching the fuel pump from its mounting point so that it rests oin the bottom of the tank I can use 38.5 litres. Not bad - but I was surprised I could not get more. So I drained the tank completely by removing the balance pipe on one side and then the other and bouncing the bike backwards and forwards until there was nothing left in the tank - well maybe a mouthful but no more than that. Then I filled the tank - it only took 38.5 litres! I really think Elkamet have been lying to you about the size of the tank - perhaps you should measure it again?

Please let me know what you think. Everyone at www.ukgser.com is waiting for your answer.

P.S. I should also mention that we have one member who claims he can get more than 41 litres in his Wunderlich tank, which I understand is the same Elkamet model as yours - but I'm not sure if anyone believes him!

So here's a pic with the bike still running with the pump
whining on and off for five miles :)

Not only that but if you look carefuly at the glass you can see a reflection of the bikes graphics! Good photo shop :D

By the way how does it feel at slow speed when full?

Feels just fine, even with 10 litres more in a jerrycan in one of Vern's panniers. Tips into corners ever so slightly more eagerly, and you can feel that the brakes are having to work a bit harder. But it has much less effect than carrying a passenger. Still plenty of agility for courier-style riding around town. I do have top dollar aftermarket suspension tho - I'm sure this helps.

On the other hand, parking needs noticeably more strength. If I ever have to pick this thing up out of soft sand I'll definitely be risking a hernia, even after removing all the luggage.

Been having a revealing dialogue with Touratech:

- they have brought out an extension kit, which lowers the fuel intake a bit. Part no: 05-100-0014-F, 32 euros. It's not in the catalogue or on the web site, which seems pretty daft given that the fitting instructions are dated July 2003. (I have a pdf of them, in German - email me if you want it.) It'll be a bitch to fit of course, because it's inside the tank. The labour cost will no doubt be several times the parts bill.

- they say that the amount of useable fuel varies from bike to bike. I suppose this is possible - BMW may have subtly altered the design of the tank's plumbing without any of us realising.

- they say they get 39 litres on test runs

- they insist the tank holds 41 litres, even though I could only get 38.5 in mine even after very conscientiously draining it via both outlets. They say they filled a brand new tank with a measuring jug and it took 41 litres, so I can't have emptied my tank properly.

Something just doesn't add up. There's no way my tank still had 2.5 litres in it after I'd drained it. I suspect the reason why they get 39 litres on test runs is cos that's all there is to get! Either that or the tanks don't all come out of Elkamet's mould the same size. Or something...maybe the new one they tested didn't have a pump or filler cap in it? Maybe tanks that are plumbed in always have 2 litres of air in them for some very good reason to do with breathing or something?

I don't reckon I'll be getting their extension kit because I now use 100% of the 38.5 litres that I think my tank holds, thanks to a modification by Pat of Mobitec fame. He's relocated my pump so it now sits at the bottom of the tank, held in place simply by using a very stiff bit of hose. I'm chuffed to bits with it. But of course I want to get 40.5 useable litres, not 38.5!

Next time I empty my sodding tank I'm going to remove it and make sure I get every last drop out. Maybe I'll get Nick at Touratech UK to witness it. Grrrr..........

I wonder they filled the tank without the pump and filter in (just a cover plate) to get the 41 liter number?

41 ltrs

Eurostar
Have you contacted Elkamet because it seems no 41ltr
tank is the same.
My tank wasn't empty and the bike was ridden to the garage and not pushed and got 38.43 into it.(i have put 41 ltrs in but have no pics)
Your tank was completely empty and you managed 38.5.

Obviously Wunderlich are selling the good ones and Touratech have been selling the 2nd's

If you want i'll come with you to Mr Plumbs to see if he can
figure out where the extra 2 1/2 ltrs goes

Cracking idea Gauloises, but no idea when as I don't live all that close to Plumb. I'm in London - where are you?

Touratech have told me that the tanks cannot vary in size because they're all made with the same tooling. And that if I want more fuel I should buy a jerrycan! Flipping jerries...

I think my Trading Standards office is nearer,
if you get my drift ;)

The same thought had occurred to me. But first I'm going to be very sure of my ground - I'm going to remove the tank and make sure that there's not a drop in it. If it takes 41litres I'll apologise to Touratech. If not I shall enjoy teaching them not to take the piss out of their customers.

ermms.... merkins...

Not wishing to pee on your bonfire here, but i reckon you might be asking fror trouble trying to pick up fuel from the very bottom of the tank...even with a plastic tank, there'll be a fair amount of little bits of crap down there........I'd imagine you could have a few probs with blocking the gauzed pickup end.

Have you thought about one of those uxilliary tanks the Merkins seem to mount a lot on the backs in addition to the jerry can??

and there I was thinking a Merkin was a pubic hair toupee...

...and the thought of having someone else's pubic hair around your partner's 'playpen' must be a real turn on...not !!:P

I never check how much fuel I have put in Peter, nor how much it costs either. I have never checked any bike I have had for fuel consumption, but I do seem to remember putting 37 or 38 litres in the tank. And I recall doing 395 miles in the US before filling up as I was worried about running out then.

I remember modifying the fuel pick up pipe and filter so that I could get to all the fuel at the bottom of the lobe by following a thread on some site or other. I must see if I can find it.
