All day today, we've had Harleys riding through town, on their way from Lincolnshire's 'do' to the ferry here in Harwich.

I stopped and had a chat with a couple of Dutch guys outside the Cafe next door to me.....nice guys, very laid back and seemed to have enjoyed themselves, which is nice....they made a fuss of my dog too, and the very fact that she let them is a VERY good indicator that they were nice blokes :)

I nodded and said 'Hi' (or variations of that down to a cursory nod and an unintelligible grunt) to a load of others as well, and recieved the same back.....Not a single rocker visible, though lots of assorted badges and leather.

We all take the piss out of the 'Twat suit', and that's fair enough...Timolgra wears one :augie But amongst ALL of the Harley riders I've seen today, all bar three had beards, and their bikes had loud pipes.

The three who didn't had lumpy jumpers.

Was the dress code obligatory this weekend, or do foreign Harlet riders conform to the uniform more than our home bred ones?

I don't actually care by the way.......and not one of them in town today came across as having any sort of bad attitude, so I'm not judging either, but it did seem that the guys coming through our sad little port town today were FAR more Homologinic than you'd see at, say, a 'Tosser's do'

:nenau

If I added a poll to this question, I wonder what proportion of the reprobates in this bar would be bearded and loud :augie

Some Harley types consider it de rigueur to sport a beard. But we have a clean shaven well dressed image to maintain (below)...

25th Aniv Bulldog Bash.

Our farts were louder than our pipes...

For your info there was a large contingent of Dutch and German bikers at the Wallace Rally in Sterling last weekend. Was drinking with them. They were nice people and some rode down to Squires near Leeds for a stop over on Wednesday. Then onto the European Super Rally in Lincoln this weekend.
It was feckin cold camping in Scotland though... (Global warming:blast - I call bollocks!)

You seem strangely obsessed.

Do YOU have a beard, Mr Pingu sir?

Do you have a large bore pipe?
Do you?
Do you sir?

I bet it suits you......fluttering wispily in the air like a wispy fluttery thing....Ooooh!!!!

Do you have any photos sir? Do you?

Photos sir, holiday snaps, of you and your wispy beard and your big bore pipe?

Ooooooh Sir!!

As it's effectively the gathering of one club (well federation of clubs to be precise) what you have observed is a gathering of people who are far more of a like mind than people who hang out on a site that professes not to be a club (discussion for another thread ;) )

I have a poor excuse for a beard and a loud bike but not a black leather jacket

Yeah, 'cause beards and loud pipes are restricted to Harley riders...

Missed a bit..

Started bike with Y piece only.......

**** that's loud!!!!

Then took off Y piece and started with downpipes only (well you have to, don't you!!)

FUCK that's SOOOOOO loud!!!

Turned round and all the neighbourhood chav kids are standing there with their fingers in their ears and big grins....I'm a chavtastic hero!!! :D

Taken rather out of context sir (but I'm flattered you took the time to look it up ;) )

I was fitting various bit of exhaust and that was merely a stage that I described......I actually run with the standard OEM cat and a stubby, because it's quiet :)

There was a 'Biker Do' in our little village a few weeks ago, it was a good event, the second in two years.

Prizes were awarded to the 'best' bikes.. mainly HD's.

Probably a couple of hundred riders.. What was obvious looking at the crowds, was that ooh.. 75% of the blokes there all looked much the same.

Stout boots (not motorcyclist ones), dirty jeans, slightly too big, a three inch wide belt, with obligatory eagles head buckle, a chain attached to said belt going to a back pocket, black T shirt, with 'bad ass' logo, sticking it 'to da man', and a leather waistcoat with various patches /badges adorning the front.

Finally a painting on the back swearing allegiance to some never heard of bike club.

A very nice day had by all, very friendly and all good stuff.

If you want to defy Harley convention buy an XR1200,I was told in my local dealer in Swansea "ha ,that's not a proper Harley though, and a mate of mine got into an argument with a "proper" Harley owner about the the fake XR1200,all a bit sad really when you have to have a particular bike to conform with what's seen as normal :blast

You don't, you can buy and ride whichever bike you choose whilst wearing whatever clothing you like with either a beard or without, loud pipes or quiet. So many choices.

Yes I agree totally ,however it seems only certain Harleys conform to the accepted Harley image and lifestyle ,we XR1200 owners are seen as a sort of sub species, which suits me fine.
