If you had asked me the other day , i would have acknowledged the K1 .
I would have thought long and hard about the Purchase .
As if it was ment to be , i bought this .
Funny old world.

So what to do , Do i try and Sell it on , or do i have a go .
The poor thing seems to have lived outside.
There is oil in the Motor , box and drive , she engauges and holds all gears
{By hand } there is play in the F.D. but not excessive .

By my judgement she is Tatty ,but complete , well the wee front cover is
missing on the "glove" box .

I know its gonnie cost , but whats your thoughts ?
Mike , Fancy a Job , Yeah , but a what price ?

I saw the advert, good price Philip.

Possibly the least desirable paint scheme but it will be nice once you've sorted it out.

That missing cover is available in primer. They are fiddly to fit and lock properly, that's why they so often go AWOL.

Change the oils, put air in the tyres and then take it for a decent blast to see if you "get it" before you spend money on it. They really make the most sense out on fast roads where the aerodynamics, length and weight work in its favour.

Lovely machine to go

Spent a Day cleaning , stripping , building , messing about with her ..

Put in a new battery , and presto , away we go.

Lovely thing to go .

No, got one.... the Black one that got the MikeP 'treatment' last year... :thumb

You mean you don't want another one at the rock-bottom, bargain-basement price that Civil would do it for Mike....? Not like you at all.....:augie

Cleaning up nicely

Ordered up some stainless mesh for the Side panels and the radiator cover .
Came up quite well .
Still waiting on the Stainless Fastener kit form the US.251020131081.jpg251020131082.jpg

I actually really quite like them in that blue.......it looks less dated somehow- the red ones were TOO in your face IMO, although that's the colour I always imagine them in when they get mentioned.

:)

Corroded casting

I was of the opinion that cast Alloy would be very very slow to decay ,
Well the bike is 1992 , that makes her 21 yrs.
I hadnt thought this could have happened in that span of time.

Nice an shiney one now fitted !

Still for sale as the clean up continues.

The Clean Up Continues ,

Ordered some mesh , boy did i get a Shock , its expensive stuff .
I measured three times and cut once ,glad to say my cutting skills proved OK .
The Complete K1 Stainless kit i ordered from the US ,didnt turn out to be as advertised .
I had to use quite a lot of my own stainless .
Yet again the Stainless V steel strengths issue came to the fore , do i dont i ? , I aired on the Safe side and didnt use Stainless
on any of the Stressed areas .021120131108.jpg021120131107.jpg021120131106.jpg021120131105.jpg

I couldnt get the Wee button heads in stainless , so i am thinking of giving the fasteners i could a wee dab of black paint ,
then again maybe not .
Overall she is cleaning up nicely.

Panel Clips

A lot of the wee panel clips were coroded badly , there was a few missing so i replaced them all.
The Snorkel on the LHS sitting on the bike was Bust from an earlier fall ?, it needed replaced , so big thanks
to Cornelious at Hurts for sourcing this bit ..

Evening Mike ,

I fancy the Stainless , i like shiney things .
I have bought a lot of Philips Heads Fasteners and have used them to great effect , ffrom an Asthetics point of view .
What kinda money would it take to fully restore a Machine like this , all plastic welding has been properly done ,using
stainless mesh ?. In honesty this is a Solid Machine , worth Investing in ,?,i think do you

Well I think that with a niche bike like a K1, originality is everything. Replacing certain fasteners with stainless will be acceptable but the black fairing and panel screws are a part of the styling. Same goes for the side and front meshes. That said, the blue and silver colour scheme probably does look better with shiny meshes.

Top money for an original bike still isn't much (given their rarity). To get near the top of the values you'd need to spend as much as it would fetch. Any issues with body panels, splits around the fixings, scuffs in the paint or damage to the graphics will severely detract because they are expensive to put right.

It needs to be as good under the plastics too. People are scared by the thought of it rotting away unseen under all the plastic.

They aren't complex bikes but people think that they are and for that reason it needs to look as though it's in tip-top condition before they'll pay decent money. Scruffy ones go cheap (as you've discovered) for those reasons.
