So...Moto Guzzi Stelvio or Triumph adventure?

I had a Guzzi before throughout the '80s loved it and toured all over Europe. I've been fond of them ever since and and have watched the company go through some tough times and not actually make a bike that I wanted to ride.

When the Stelvio first came out, I really was excited about it but after riding it was really dissapointed. After the 2009 engine updates, it was a much much better bike and having ridden the 2011 model with 32ltr tank, it now looks to be the bike it really should have been in the first place.

Along comes the Trumpet 1200 Adventure and my head is turned. Now what do I do, the Triumph is getting really hyped up, there is a lot of anticipation about how good it will be but details pricing etc are only just being announced with the carrot of a 'launch' edition with £300 worth of goodies on. But...will there be another version following with bigger tank etc? Who knows?

Or do I just buy a 2nd hand KTM and wait another year?................
 
If you love Guzzi's so much why not just get one?

I really liked the Stelvio myself, felt the forks were way too soft but apart from that I thought it was fantastic (and for a few hundred quid you could get the forks re-sprung / re-valved)

The bike seemed to have load of character and felt a shade quicker than my 2008GS, with a great sound and really nice power delivery.

The Mrs did not like it on the back though, nothing she could put her finger on, just she prefered the GS / Tenere.

I expect you could get a 2009 Guzzi for a year or two and chop it in for a Triumph without losing a fortune (as the first owners will have already done it for you)
 
Yes I have considered that. I would need to make sure it was the one with the engine changes though
 
Guzzi would be my choice. I fell for it when it was released but never actually rode the Stelvio and to this day haven't yet owned a Stelvio. My choice is based upon previous Guzzi ownership.

Now that the 'issues' with the Stelvio are reportedly to be all ironed out this would only re-inforce my decision.

The fly in the ointment would be that your head has been turned! :nenau
 
Guzzi, I have had mine since 2008 probably the launch bike in the UK Love it couldn't be without it, the new models are much better and with a 32 ltr Tank an awesome tourer.

But you never get yours much above 60kph though Tony :augie
 
I had a good long test ride on a new 32 litre tank Stelvio NTX last summer , it was a very nice bike, more in character with the 1150 GSA than the 1200 GSA (ie it had soul).
The finish was very good and it was nice to ride but the handling was a little bit off due to overly soft front forks.
The problem was that two up it was cramped for me and the wife and as I only intended to keep what I bought for 3 years until I retire the resale value loss would have been crippling compared to the 1200GSA.
It's the bike Guzzi should have brought out in 2005 and it would have really hit BMW's sales.
 
I have ridden all 3 incarnations of the stelvio and each one is a marked improvement over the previous for me. I also rode the multistrada which undoubtedly is a 'better' bike but it didn't talk to me like the Guzzi did.

I'm just wondering how good the Triumph will be, when I would actually take delivery and whether there will be a better version announced post launch
 
Stelvio now, Explorer in two or three years when any issues are sorted. Don't forget the Triumph will come with Triumph warranty:blast, so maybe another reason to let them sort any issues, recalls and so on, then buy one that's sorted. Why be the test mule?
 
The Stelvio is a Guzzi, it is different to the other bikes out there and has character.

The Explorer is a Triumph, it is not much differnt to the run of the mill Jap stuff out there and has no chracter.

I know which I'd choose :)

It would have to be a hell of a good deal to get me to part with my hard earned for either. A quick glance at the depreciation figures for either make scares the bejaysus out of me :eek:

A nice, nearly new GS or a KTM, some bling and new riding kit, and a quality trip somewhere like Romania. That's a good use for your money :thumb

Which makes it a perfect bike to buy as a one year old, low mileage jobby :thumb2

I buy my bikes as a company bike so that actually works in my favour after 2 years when I buy it off the company....although I guess the company still takes a hit
 
I've seen your posts before about Triumph warranty Bob. Youve obviously had a problem with them. Is that just typical or were you just unfortunate?
