They got it halfway down the road before the police caught one of them, the others scarpered. Must say, a massive thank you to my neighbours who spotted it and the GMP for responding so quickly and efficiently.

Anyway, the reason for my post - they snapped the steering lock, is this something i can fix? I'm just glad there isn't any other damage (that i've yet spotted).
 
Can be fixed. You'll need a new ignition/lock unit, bolts to the top yolk.
 
Why do they snap so easily?
Surely the idea of a lock is to stay locked!
 
For the future I can recommend a Bumpstop. It's a ride in device that clamps the front wheel and holds up the bike. You then chain bike to the Bumpstop. The design is so that the chain covers the ground bolts. It's thatcham approved too. Can be fitted to concrete floors inside and out

With the wide bars on the GS/A there is a lot of leverage for the scum bags to use. They sit on the seat and use their feet on the bars to break the steering lock.
