Brake disc's (10k) out of the bmw ones from new? does this seem right.
brake pads.

Bmw 1200gs adventure 2013

any recommendations on what ones to buy?

A friend is going to replace them for me, any ideas or info would be much appreciated.

What have you guys used in the past and how did you find them.

10k doesn't seem a lot for disc and pads? I just had my 12k service and I'm only at 20% worn on the front and 30% at the back. Have you taken a look yourself to check?
 
Do you actually mean the discs ?. If so the brakes have probably been binding, and they ought to be replaced under warranty along with a caliper overhaul. I actually expect you to mean brake pads, if so the rears are known to wear out in no time at all, and 10k is a good distance on them.
 
I am currently on an oil rig at the moment and my bike was picked up for service from bmw dealers, The email I got back said,

"The rear brake discs are at the legal limit so requires new discs and pads" Didn't know there was a limit on Discs?

The email quote I was sent said
"Remove and install or replace rear brake disc" £46
"Remove and and replace or install rear brake disc pads" £17
"Rear lignin G"?? what ever that means £56
"Brake disc @1" £160

bit of a noob at mechanical stuff to be honest.
 
The limit refers to the thickness of the disc. On my RT it starts off at 4.5mm thick and has to be replaced when it gets down to 4mm thick. If you have got through a disc in 10k miles is there a brake binding ?.
 
I'd get clarification of this... I've had 2 sets of pads in 70000 miles and no discs... And ask them what a ligninG is...
 
I am sure I would of noticed the brakes binding it has run smooth ill check them out when I get home is the best bet.

on the other subject if this is the case what's the masses recommendation for disc's and pads? will let you know what happens when I get back Tuesday.

Ill go in and see them on Wednesday and check over the bike on Tuesday also.
 
The first two figures are labour charges.
The second two figures are the components.
Brake 'linings' are the friction material (pads).

Probably need to add VAT to that quote too.

At £160 for a single rear brake disk, I'd tell them where to go !!
 
Hmm, sounds like they are trying it on to me.
Save your pennies and go for a second opinion, plus if they have worn that quickly I wouldn't be forking out for another set of the same.
 
My brakes are not binding and I keep the callipers clean. Front and rear pads replaced at 12k and 9k respectively. I don't consider myself hard on brakes. When I was looking for my bike I did see a demonstrator with a rear disc worn by at least a millimetre and the rears are known to wear. As you might expect the BMW parts are expensive and alternatives are available.
 
I think ill get a second opinion, on everything.

I pay for the bmw extended warranty every year, would doing this labour outwith bmw void this warranty I wonder, I could ask them but il put it out there if anyone knows.

what is a good disc to be looking at for a replacement?

Just for reading,

advised a needed a new battery £125 + vat

My headlight has a small crack in the plastic, no water gets into it all works fine was advised to change that unit also. £275 +vat

2* tyres 206+vat

all in with the brake disc etc wanted £1200 haha

no danger.
 
TRW Lucas or Brembo for alternatives. Available from Louis.de, Brembo rear discs from €120, front from €160 each. TRW Lucas front & rear discs are the same price from €120 each.
Other places may have them but the exchange rate favours you.

Has it had the rear wheel flange done? If not you might be able to twist their arm on the labour-- get the flange done at the same time. Some of the work is common to both jobs.
 
My 2011 gsa (non abs) had its 16,000 mile service last month , part of the health check is measuring pads and discs thickness.

Mine had less than 30% wear on the original front and rear pads and the discs had negligible wear either on the front or rear , sounds like either a problem with the bike or the dealer taking the p@ss
