so what are the alternatives you would consider?

51 bhp is hardly gonna give you much excitement unless your a 5 stone anorexic. Take the 800 tiger it has 95 bhp and the 800gs has 85bhp so the 700 nc is a bit of a damp squib. Honda should be ashamed of the nc.

So you've ridden one then ? Considering many bikes have similar power outputs and given the target market the NC series is aimed at, methinks you are missing the point. Not everyone wants or needs big hp and considering how well said NC models are selling, not everyone cares either.

The NC700 felt quick enough, pulls from nowt so feels faster than it is. Depends what you want really.

I've also had a decent test ride on a 700 and the torque felt great. If you don't want to scream about at 100+ or stand it on the back wheel onthe throttle they are great and very economical bikes. Shame about the chain, a toothed belt would have been a far better option IMHO.

Having had several GS's, I thought I'd try something different, and bought a Crosstourer, but at 275kg wet, I find it's simply too heavy to push around.
Fantastic engine, tho'.

It'll be on the market next week, going for a twin cam GS next :bounce1

Phil

Would be interested in more detailed comments on the comparison. When I bought my current GS, I really quite liked the look of the crosstourer and fancied the auto box.

Most people ride in the low mid range an almost never rev into the power curve. The NC700 hasnt got the top end power but the mid range wont be as weak as an engine built for power at high revs. An R1 or Faser Thou wont pull the skin etc unless its revved. Many Ive seen are ridden like the top end rev range is from another planet.

The new V Strom looks like good value.

I am really struggling to find a desirable alternative.

I had considered the F800GSA but after having already had an F8GS this seems unlikely.

Most desirable bikes right now to me are the 1200GSA and the Guzzi Cali 1400 , but both impractical, and for different reasons.

A lot to like about the Vstrom 1000, shame the reviews so far have not been great. I think it will be the KTM for me - but then again - I do like my GS and may keep it a while.

It's all to do with weight.:rob My 650 XCountry only has 50 odd bhp, weighs as much as a bowl of custard (tosser sized, obviously:P), and is a great little bike.:beerjug:

Me personally, I don't know what I'd replace the GS with. But the 2 other bikes I like are the 1200RT and the 1600cc Goldwing.

I don't think I'm ready for one of them yet though.... I still have a ZZR600 for riding like a twat on :D

Whenever I've bought a "replacement" bike I've not got on with it..so I say: Either spruce up your current steed or buy something different: A sports tourer, custom, ...whatever..

:beerjug:

I thought about it last year but can't get on with much else for what I need. When the time comes to give my old girl a break from the big mileage runs, I'll probably go for a TC Adventure.

KTM 1190......far too focused for me but a stonking motor. Didn't gel with it really for some reason which I can't put my finget on.

Super Ten 1200......dull as ditchwater and not a patch on the 1200GS performance wise. It's solid and reliable by all accounts and I think a half decent replacement for an 1150.

Stelvio.......charming and a bit of a laugh but i wouldn't trust it in the arse end of nowhere

Crosstourer......yuk, just fucking yuk.

Everything else on the market just look and feel like sportsbikes with straight bars which aren't my bag.

So for me, a nice second hand twin cam later this year:thumb2

I had a Stelvio, compared to a GS it was heavy, soft forks, noisy screen, poor fueling and had potential reliability problems. Sounded great, looked good, individual. I preferred the GS, more sorted but with its own potential reliability issues. I would take a chance on the V Strom, it wouldn't be too much of a gamble.

I'd have a Honda F6C Valkyrie with all the chrome bling but not the new bland corporate style version.

But the GSA Mk2 is a keeper unless I get a GSA LC.

What model year Stelvio did you have? Potential reliability problems? don't all mechanical vehicles have these?

It was a 2008 although the Triumph /Ducati dealer from North Wales who sold it to me said it was a 2010 (F****** liar) If I had known it was an earlier model I wouldn't have bought it. I know the later ones were better and I might have kept it if it was as described. The Stelvio has its good points and I am sure the latest version is much more sorted.

This thread has given me reason to look closer at the NC700DCT, and to me this Honda seems to make perfect sense! The update for 2014 is an increased capacity to 750cc but still at a ridiculously bargain budget price. For solo riding, more often than not using it on the rat run commute to work and back but with a solitary annual tour, it is looking a very attractive alternative to the big GS.

I don't see why Honda should be ashamed at all with this bike, on the contrary, I think they may just have hit the nail on the head!

NC750 DCT now heads the shortlist.

Bike change

I will possibly change next year. So far I fancy the Triumph Tiger 800XC but have not ridden one. Taking out the GSA 800 next week will see what I think. Later in the summer will ride the Triumph. Anyone ridden one for a decent test?
