So what 'they worth then?

I'll be buying a GS in the not too distant future, however I have a dilemma.

I could probably afford an 1100 more or less immediately and still enjoy what's left or our miserable summer (and I'm being pressurised by a mate who's just bought himself a brand new GSA and wants someone to play out with ). Or I could wait a few months and save more, getting an 1150 (or perhaps even a 1200) either winter or early next year. (Having said this, I don't want a brake servo, so my choice is restricted to non-ABS bikes between 03 and 07). I've no problem with an 1100 (although the tart in me prefers the look of the 1150 lights / beak ) and I know that I may have to apply spanners occasionally.

Of course this depends on what they're worth...
People have told me that I can get a decent 1100 for £2000, whereas other have said "nah mate you need to be spending £3000 - £3500". Obviously a lot will depend on condition and history (and to some extent an 1100 owner may naturally have a slightly 'enhanced' opinion of 1100 value), but that's quite a difference

The last thing I want to do is stick a wanted ad in the sale section and get laughed off the forum for having a blatantly unrealistic idea of pricing, so any pointers as to 'real world' values of 1100's (or indeed any other GS ) would be greatly appreciated.

2002 1150 GS is the way to go.

No servo assisted brakes, but still ABS. Only single spark. They go for anywhere from 3500k upwards depending on condition.

I have a mate looking to spend "not a lot" on a GS and he's struggling. Cheap ones get snapped up quickly regardless of miles and condition because they do go on pretty much forever and are easy to fix/do up. Decide on what you want to spend then look hard!

And don't forget that the "accessories" add up some!

Hello again,got an 1100 and an1150 ,the latter is a fantastic bike but the former is noticably lighter,got a much better set of ratios,far less genetic faults,is less complex,better off road,cheaper for parts,cheaper to insure,oh yeh and its cheaper.The 1100 is not real world slower ,yeh the 1150 looks better but with the money you save theres a lot you can do with an 1100.Think dieserto fairings,think twin HIDs,think 1150 RT/RS barrels ,pistons + cams (+14bhp and allthe tuning recipes been done by BMW engineers no flat spots etc)Do that and you would have somethng unusal,lighter,faster and still better on the dirt than an 1150 for roughly the same price.Best of all,you only need £2k for a bloody good bike the rest of the plan can slowly ripen in the back of the shed at your leisure..........

1100's are out there from as little as a grand, a decent one will set you back abut 1800-2000.

non abs early (99/2000) 1150's (or later ones with seriously high miles) will set you back around 2500-3000.

2001/2003 abs bikes will fetch 3000-3750, and theres plenty around but they do go very quickly, once people put a sensible price on them.

Anything newer may be a bit pricey from the numbers you've discussed, but even at the top end a very tidy 2005 1150 Adventure can be had for 4500-5000.

1200's start at about the 4800 mark, and 1200 adventures start at 6K.

Extras (luggage, bling, etc) usually seem to get stripped off and sold seperately as they're worth more that way.

Prices are plummeting at the moment..... probably for the same reason house and car prices are. General economic woes.

But there does seem to be really steady demand for these, ones at the right price will generally get snapped up within a few days, if not hours, of being posted. But you can also look at the forums and ebay, and see the same bikes lingering for weeks and months with no interest. Usually because they're overpriced by a couple of grand or so.

Do some research, watch the forums and ebay, haggle, and be prepared to move quickly when you find the right price.

Matt, had an W plated 1150.. part exed it for an 1100 anniversary (98) it had twice the mileage on it (50k).. no better or worse than the 1150.. just as much get up and go... and not so much to worry about as the bike stands to owe you less

Liked the 1100 just as much as the 1150.....

go for it Matt,if you can spanner you can pick up a real bargain,personally I would look for one with a knackered clutch (you will find one!) oooh mate thats £650 off asking price.About £160 for the bits,but will take all day to fix.At least then you know the achillesheal (same on all 4v IMO) is out of the way for a long time.You now have a shiny 11 with a brand new clutch for under £1.5k plus youve learnt a lot about BMW weirdness Cheers
