So why is V9 less detailed than multimap etc?

When finding a location on multimap (so I know where to put a waypoint on mapsource) I see that multimap shows some minor roads that mapsource doesn't.

Does this mean mapsource is crap:nenau

Have it set to highest detail and zoomed right in.

I'm using it with a quest1 but the detail isn't there on the PC anyway.
 
Memory size?

GPS can't have the server sized based memory size that multimap does I'd guess.

Plus, most GPS's are sold to car drivers, and how often do they go off "A" roads?

Maps contain a vast amount of data - in order to keep memory size sensible the data is compressed - it takes a lot of processing power to search, decompress and display the data - so amount of detail is kept to a minimum. GPS is very handy; but also worth having local maps if you really need fine detail.

Technology -huh. Those lazy software engineers need to pull their finger out instead of dunking buscuits and serfing porn:D
 
I think Garmin have been a little shy with some of thier mapping data, I've V7 City Select and V8 City Navigator Europe and I've had a couple of instances where TomTom Europe (on a PDA) had more detailed local roads than Garmin did, Seen this in both southern Spain and southern England so doubt thats is an original source data lacking detail or a memory problem...

Its not so much place names etc, just the minor roads in country areas etc.

You notice it when trying to place a waypoint in an exact position. Look at map link for a campsite then try and use this to place a waypoint. Its then I notice some minor roads are not displayed on mapsource.

Wouldn't be so bad if you could choose a full detail setting on the pc which didn't display on the unit.
 
If Navteq (or Tele Atlas) want to employ me to get the mapping right, I’m available for a mere £35.000 per annum + Carver trike as company car :D

Yep - they are a lazy bunch, all they seem to be able to do these days is create slow running 'bloatware' using painfully slow interpreted girly high-level object orientated languages running on top of overly complicated operating systems. In my day we had to get down and dirty with machine code and assembly language and do everything ourselves - proper man's programming it were!

Sinclair! - luxury! I had to make to with a borrowed home made 8085 board and an EPROM programmer - you had to make sure your code was right first time otherwise you had to wait 30 minutes whilst the UV eraser wiped your one and only 2708. Concentrated the mind I'll tell you. :D

Or they could employ me but it would cost a whole lot more, you get what you pay for :D:D:D
