As a former hospital worker I have seen lots of what alcohol can do - on occasions helping the A/E porters to corral the drunken entourage of the real casualty.
The proposed social responsibility levy will be paid ultimately by all consumers.
Given that the level of obesity is also an issue might we expect a social responsibility levy on food in the future?
Some authorities claim that alcohol & food can be demarcated on the grounds that one is a drug. Defining a drug as a substance used for medication may or may not exclude alcohol - perhaps much of the original social problem lies within that conundrum.
I see the nanny state make further inroads while personal responsibility is eclipsed - discuss.

they never learn

prohibition doesn't work, but creates wealth for the suppliers.
fat tax, please ask the Walmart/Pattyfactory types to donate a bit of their profits.
next up is a danger-tax, if you are partial to real cheese or nibble on a leg of jamon iberico.
just waiting for the Europe/Germans made us do it stick again.

Addiction

What about all the fuckers addicted to touratech. What's the government doing to to help them? Its just more discrimination.

If you look at Mediterranean countries where booze is very cheap, you generally don't see people falling out of pubs and getting sick on the streets( with the exception of tourists).

However, when you look at Northern Europe, where booze is very expensive, a massive binge drinking culture exists. I include U.K. and Ireland in this.
