Socket Set Advice - Whats Best

I am going to recommend getting a VERY decent 3/8 socket set 7mm ~ 19mm like Teng or When I worked for Brown Brothers here we had Taskmaster that was a Canadian version of Snap on but about 1/3rd of the cost so much so Snap on 3/8 drive inserts dropped right in when Brown brothers were absorbed into a bigger couple of groups

I still have my Taskmaster 3/8 drive set and I bought a snap on 14 or 15 inch ratchet and a decent breaker bar ( I still have my first Draper green line back when Draper were a premier brand) and Gedore 1/2 inch stuff I tend to keep my Teng set in the bike and the Taskmaster and 1/2 inch stuff in the toolbox If you know you will only need certain sizes? Just buy nice ones of those

You guys all know how long I have spannered and hope to keep spannering and in all that time I wore out about 3 Taskmaster 3/8 drive internals and just bolted a new internal replacement in! There is just something about a precision made tool over a cheapie copy etc etc The Halfords advanced are "okay" but not as nice to use as my original stuff

What I am saying is that BUY a decent 3/8 Socket set "only" Like Facom or Mac or Snap who on used to have Blue point as a cheaper version, Teng, Taskmaster if you find NOS or even used

Buy a Really nice set of spanners AS above

And as you go along decent Screwdrivers, plyers. waterpump plyers, sidecutters

and keep it all in a decent used tool box you can pick them up on Facebook marketplace / Gumtree frequently

Buying those "Kits" is a pain in the hole! Having separate's means you can lift what you need from its drawer or rack in eth tool box uses it walk back in and put it away without worrying about dropping it or it not clicking in or DISASTER you drop that bastardin case!!

Once you have bought them and you look after them ?? You never need to replace them

AND to be honest there is a big difference between the feel and the quality controlled tool and a cheap version No matter how my Dad explains that it cost a 1/3 or what mine did
Yeah Dad but your makita copy has died and had to be replaced 5 times now !! my £125 Screwfix Erbauer brushless is still good as are my Milwaukee 3/8 daga daga and 3/8 ratchet
Same with his spanners Over the years he has broken 20 or 30 I have yet to break one ever except a cheapie !!

So don;t go mad for an expensive big set of screwdrivers Just buy a mid sized Phillips and a mid sized flat and a decent set of bits because you never use half of the screwdrivers

My boss turned up last year in the tail lift truck with a 6ft tall premier roll cab for our workshop (same as Teng). About four grands worth with almost every tool we need.

It’s already half empty.

Thieving bastards !

We are hoping to retire and downsize to a bungalow but one non-negotiable is room for a large workshop. We’ll need two removal trucks, one for us and another for my own tool collection, built up over forty years of spannering.

another Halfords Advanced fan. I broke a hollow point torx socket on a stuck bolt and it was replaced as per the lifetime warranty.
Same for me, I bought a large and comprehensive tool case for about £90 many years ago.
Their ‘Life time guarantee’ works too, I snapped the torx 45 bit which they replaced at no cost. As a result I’ve bought more of their Professional range.

Just an example..but Halfords have some great deals on lifetime warranty sets. If you know someone with a Trade Card it can make a massive saving.

Good shout.

My work gave me a set of WERA VDE interchangeable screwdrivers, sockets, torx bits, flip head wrench etc and a 10/13mm Joker spanner in a Velcro fold up pouch.

It’s about £100 worth or so but it gets used almost daily it’s so handy.
I have the same bit of kit £130 from RS components?WERA is really nice kit.
Virtually all my tools at work are WERA but not the best value.
When your ordering £20k plus of work consumables per annum from RS what’s few bits of WERA on the side to make the orders to nice round figures.

What he said. I still have my Snap on panel hammer bought in about 1977/8 ish. It has never had a new shaft and is still very well balanced in my hand. Quality tools are worth the money if you use them for work. If just mucking about at home then decent tools are probably enough. I do have a Halfords professional socket set that is probably 20 years old and still all working fine including the ratchet.

I recently bought a Parkside 1/4" set for 14.90 euros

I didn't even need it but couldn't help myself, it's excellent quality made in Germany

Otherwise I've got a mix of Snap on and Facom and some Draper and BGS, some of which I've had for 40 years

I bought a dewalt set a while back which seemed good value for money..

wasn't this one and was only about £70
