Hi all,

I’m looking to buy a socket / spanner set. Something like the Halfords advanced 200 piece set. I would however consider other good quality sets. I would also be happy to purchase any other larger sets, if the price is right.

Please let me know if you have anything you are happy to part with.

Cheers
John

@bonjird Don't go for a HUGE set

Buy a decent Small 3/8th set from a really Good brand Teng / Halfords Pro is even okay but Single hex / 6 sided sockets are a must!!
Buy a decent set of spanners and as a brucey bonus ratchet spanners
Good Screwdrivers and pliers
and If you want more extensions, deep sockets, E torx and Torx bits, just buy them separately too!
I have a 3 teir toolbox system and it carries all my tools but its is easy to open the 3/8 th drawer and take out a ratchet and extension and open the "Bits" drawer and lift out a torx and carry it out to do whatever I am doing (Each drawer in my system, has its own theme 3/8th socketry 1/2 inch Socketry Screwdrivers Spanners Pliers etc etc

I know it's overkill for you but a toolbox chest on a bench with your stuff arranged so it is easy to find AND wiped clean and put back after every job is a set for life

Trust me My Dad had the big set and it is completely fucked after dropping it as he could not be arsed to put everything back in their slots

Its heavy to carry and you have to carry it / open out to just get a couple of bits

Small component Sets are MUCH easier to work with!!

Honestly Halfords are decent quality but they seem to overcomplicate it with the big sets !

I have the Advanced 200 set and its very comprehensive plus good quality however the downside is it extremely heavy to carry and the box is huge. Its more of a on the bench set I think but covers everything I need and for the occasional carry its ok.

I do however use the smaller sets more often like the Draper, Teng and Bahco . The Bahco I have for a good 20 yrs and its never failed or rusted

Hi and thank you for the reply. I’m looking for a bigger set that has everything I need. I have a few socket sets but I’ve not looked after them so there are bits missing here and there. I’ve also managed to break a few cheap ratchets.
So to be clear, I would like a good quality, complete, used, large set.
Obviously the money I am looking to pay, is less than I would pay for a new set.
Thank you
John

I don’t mind if the case is large - it can sit on the bench in the garage. I’m thinking it will be my go to and I will want to keep it complete / look after it.

Some good advice here, on a bike you’ll probably never need a 1/2” ratchet, you can get away with a torque wrench or breaker bar and Individual sockets if you need them for a single sided hub nut for example

Otherwise a 3/8” set and a 1/4” set is nice to have, an adapter can mean you can get away with just one ratchet if you want to but it’s better to have one of each

Also tailor your tools to your bikes,
If you work on BMW they’re mainly torx bolts and a few allen screws, not many traditional bolt heads
If you work on Japanese bikes get a good set of JIS screwdrivers

A drawer chest is the best option, most tend to be sold with a roller cab

My roller cab is still in my mum’s garage in Blighty so my box is on a board with casters from Lidl, I move the box to wherever I’m working on the bike, makes life easy as all your tools are to hand

I agree with this, I have a large Halfords set but I avoid using it unless I really have to ask its a pain to use. My default is the small starter set my Dad bought me when I was teenager.

Have a look here:

I have separate 1/2” , 3/8” and 1/4” Draper Expert socket sets. They are great quality and even I’ve not managed to break any of it! Definitely worth considering. :thumb2

The set would not just be for motorcycles. I regularly work on cars and vans. As I said before, it would be good to have one good quality, go to set, that I can keep track of and look after.
Let me know if you have anything that may fit the bill.
Cheers

You are heading down a slippery slope , it all started with a set of inherited Elora Metric Ring Spanners and a Gedore 1/2" socket set (all good quality German made kit)

Then one day you realise that your garage contains 3 tool chests full of £1000's of socket sets ,spanners, pullers , pliers , screwdrivers , numerous specialist tools, a lathe , huge compressor. air tools , power tools ,polishers .

For cars it is always 1/2" and occasionally the 3/4" drive sets that get used but for the bikes it is almost exclusively 3/8" drive and of that it tends to be a set of deep drive sockets and a set of hex head/spline drives which get the majority of use

All my stuff is made by Bahco, used in a professional capacity until recently and never let me down.
Can’t fault any of it.
Good value if you can find it on promotion.

Great advice from everyone and much appreciated.
But so far not one offer of anything for sale.
Please let me know if you have anything, that you are willing to part with, before I buy new.
Cheers
