I've just decided I'm not going to recommend anything again! The reason is that over the last few weeks I've said how good my kit is. However today I've been out around Wales for a 280 mile ride and it's been mainly wet followed by more wet and finally on the way home I've been riding through floods.

1st: My Rukka trousers have leaked for the first time in 3 years, although I've never washed them (edit: not that that would help) :blast

2nd My Pinlock misted up, ok so it was after about 5 hours but again a first.

3rd My Daytona gore-tex boots leaked (both of them) first time in 18 months:confused:

Oh and one of my heated grips packed up, I've always said how good the above kit is. None of it has ever leaked before in similar conditions so from now on I'm never going to tell anybody how good stuff is:thedummy

On a positive side, my EXO heated waistcoat was just great...Doh:blast

Does Goretex leak if not washed? I thought it would just stop breathing (outwards) ?

Al :)

Yes you would be right:blast I'll edit my post, still trying to get my head round the fact that it leaked in the first place:o

Goretex can fail at any point in its life, dont forget the excellent Rukka/Goretex guarantee where they will inspect and replace or repair the item free of charge if within the 5 year guarantee period.

Washing can help prolong the material's life, but I've not idea at all if not washing it made the slightest difference here.

On my Rukka kit, I've found that its the taped seams tend to go first as theyre the most likely to come undone. Especially around the upper sleeves and crutch areas - anywhere where there are a lot of seams really :)

I dont think a material has been invented yet which can do it all between Protection/Waterproof/Comfort. But Rukka scores high marks in all three so I, like many others, have no problems in recommending them. If it wasnt for their excellent warranty, I might be saying something else, but the fact is if it does go wrong, then they will either fix it or replace it with the current version. If you get the latter, then you effectively get a new version to replace your x year old version, thus making your initial purchase go even further!

I've not been using Pinlock that long, but I have found that it does give up eventually if its put through prolonged torrential rain. If you are able to break your journey and dry it out thorughly, or carry a spare, then I think you'll be ok.

As the trousers are only 3 years old, I'll be taking them in for checking.. just got to find the receipt:blast

:D

I remember reading in an outdoors mag, that where clothing was flexed (elbows, knees etc.) the Goretex membrane could break down in as little as three months in heavily used clothing. This was in relation to mountain rescue and similar applications.

There's another Goretex type of membrane, mebbee Pertex, who's properties are actually improved with washing.

It's the waterproof properties of the outer layer of the garment fabric which is the most important element in keeping you dry. If you wore a latex suit you'd be protected from external water, but you'd be a wee bit sweaty! Latex... sweaty..... Wow!

If it makes you feels any better I`ve got a drysuit that I get wet in
As long as you weren`t soaked I would`nt worry!

my daytonas failed around the 2 year mark. currently with the manufacturer in germany.

my rukkas occasionally exhibit a damp gusset (ooh er), but the dealer reckons it's from the inside.
the fact that it's never happened when wearing breathable underwear inclines me to think it's true.

i'd like to apologise for any untoward images the above paragraph might have caused. thank you.

Glad I didn't read that last night, I'd have been having nightmares:augie

To be honest the trousers leaked enough to have been equivalent to a mug of water, I'll be taking them back:thumb
