So, I'm thinking about some luggage for the GSA, as I'll be doing a few trips this year. I don't think I'll bother with panniers, as they'll sit on the shelf for 11 months of the year.

I'm looking at either the BMW rollbag, or the large Sportbag to use in conjunction with my top box. I'll pop to my dealer for a proper look at the weekend, but in the meantime, can someone tell me if I put the large softbag on the pillion seat, will the hard edges on the base clear the pillion handles? And if I go with the rollbag instead, what straps do these come with, if any?

I use a bm roll bag when I don't use the panniers, it has a hard inside base so everything stays crease free however I don't use the supplied straps, I use 2 Rox straps only, its very secure and a lot easier to carry thro hotel corridors then panniers.

For a two week tour last year (hotels). Luggage was a top box and roll bag. (Bike - 1200 GS LC).
Highlander 35L canoe bag.
2 x Cam buckle tie downs.
Rubber non slip matting wrapped around pillion seat.

This set up worked a treat. Got a good drenching at times but the bag held firm and kept everything bone dry.
I cut the cam buckle straps to a more convenient length then burned the ends with a match to prevent fraying.
Worked a treat and cost buttons compared with the Beemer bags.

The large sport bag is fine on the GSA pillion seat with the top box fitted and clears the grab rails. Unless you're taking the kitchen sink there's more than enough space for a few days trip.

I still have the first generation BMW roll bag , massive 50l . I can take even my hair dryer :augie . The new one is an improvement :thumb

Thanks guys, very helpful.:thumb

So, are the straps with the rollbag no good then?

Hi Nutty
Got a large BMW soft bag same as post 4
Bought it last year, only used about 3 times so as new.
Part exed my old 57 plate for a new GS in November with full vario so not now required.
Make me an offer, will even come for a ride out to Surrey if you interested.
Mobile number 0777 607 7100.
Regards
Willie.

60 litre Lomo bag fixed with a couple of rok straps. Plenty of room for my camping gear etc and my tenor ukulele. Have never bothered with the hard planners. :thumb2

90litre Overboard roll top bag. Superbly built, huge BUT it obviously rolls down to 70/50 lites. It is fairly rigid so could go across the back OR in line with the bike. Fully waterproof. Superb.

"its very secure and a lot easier to carry thro hotel corridors then panniers."

This made me laugh ! First trip with my various I struggled through the narrow corridors of the Isle of Man ( crappy ) hotel . Couldn't believe how unmanageable they were .

This made me laugh ! First trip with my bmw vario panniers I struggled through the narrow corridors of the Isle of Man ( crappy - aren't they all ?) hotel .

I couldn't believe how unmanageable they were .
Also I don't like riding with them on , they mess with the mpg , make climbing aboard hip-wrenching and hamper filtering through traffic... So for a week at the TT they HAD to be removed.

Soft luggage ( if you can live with the security risk ) is far better imho.

Nutty......have a good look at the Kriega stuff :beerjug:
British made, superb construction and totally modular, so you can scale it up or down depending on trip.....lashes down exceptionally well, totally waterproof and just bloody good kit :beerjug:

Having a bunch of smaller bags that mix and match together has some big advantages in keeping things separate, and you can have 'pods' ready to go like Thunderbird 2.....need your camping kit one weekend? Just load the US20 up with a couple of US10s on the sides and a US5 on top.

The US10, mounted on the tank bra gives you a weekend away kit, or swap it for a US5 for everyday carry.

I've NEVER been let down by my Kriega kit and it's always a pleasure to use....can't speak highly enough of it :thumb2

Kreiga was another thought. I have a US5 that I use as a daypack on my other bike, so maybe a US20 or 30 would be a good solution. The good thing with those, is I could use them on either bike. I'd imagine the BMW 50 litre rollbag on the S1000 could be entertaining!:P

Just a word Nutty, I had a Kreiga US20 and 2 US10s but on my S1000RR it was not great because of the shape of the pillion seat. So I sold it on the bay of fleas.
