Chaps, I'm heading to Le France in July and will be travelling fairly light with my softbag3 and my tank bag. I will mostly be with the bike but there may be the odd occasion where I'm away from it and wondered what others do to secure soft luggage to the bike. I was thinking coiled type 2.5mm cable with a wee lock. Interested in all experiences?

Apart from in big cities security is not really a problem, a cable lock is a good idea but probably not essential

In tourist towns you’ll often see jackets and helmets left on bikes

I personally use a small Abus cable lock for jackets when the boxes are full, but it’s not exactly unbreakable, and I put our lids in the top box

Pacsafe is good bit of kit.

I have one you're welcome to borrow, Im away then but don't need for that trip (y) (y)

What are you leaving in your bag? T-shirts, shorts, pants....so don’t worry. Anything valuable take with you.

I leave my soft bags, with no additional security. Anything of value I have in my modestly sized tank bag, which I take with me.

The soft bags have separate waterproof inners, so I can take their contents to my room at night, the bags staying on the bike.

I do, of course, have a pound of butter in the fridge.

+1
No worries in the places I want to be in. Always avoid larger cities on tour unless by necessity, in which case I am normally in a hotel so my bags are inside with me
I carry a decent pushbike cable lock for fastening the helmet to the bike sometimes, so I can leave the lid on the bike

gents, thanks for all the advice. not intending on leaving the bike for long but there may be periods when travelling where the bike is out of sight (lunch etc).

I think many people have a slightly jaundiced view of the world tainted by living in the shit hole that is the UK .
I’ve toured all over Europe with soft ( and hard) luggage and never been bothered by security .

I prefer traveling on road with hard luggage for this very specific reason - risk is lower.
I have however parked my bikes with the soft roll bag on multiple times, couple of times for more than an hour.
I would have survived losing a pair of shoes, tools, light jacket and other random items though.

I don't even generally leave my bikes unlocked (disc lock) ever. So I'm less trusting of others in general.

Outside larger cities is generally ok/a bit safer I'd say. I wouldn't dare south of France anywhere populated near the coast/popular areas or Italy similar.
Pound of butter obligatory.

I bought some car surfboard security straps from Amazon for my Bumot bags. Less than £30. They have 3 steel wires through them.
I leave the bags full and secured if only staying one night. Only ever have clothes in them.
