Sold bike with right aiming headlight by dealer

As far as the Uk MOT is concerned the headlamp beam is testable and failable.

thats not what BMW say (not that that means anything - most main dealers of any vehicle are fitters, not mechanics :D )[/QUOTE]

By BMW do you mean head office or the salesman at your dealers. If the dealer is an MOT testing station speak to the tester. If he says the same tell VOSA.

then why make a comment? :ronno

It was a question not a comment and although asked to you I didn't mean to cause the offence that you seem to have read into it. That's one of the drawbacks to posting not speaking.

The answer is simple though, I find it disconcerting that anyone could drive any vehicle for four years and not realise that the lights pointed in the wrong direction.

Having imported my 02 (euro spec) 1150GSA into the UK from the middle east, I also need to get it MOT'd and registered.
Any photos on that dipped beam conversion or, is it that simple?
Will take the cover off this week.

Again with grey imports......the KPH speedo! Will a wireless bicycle one suffice or a GPS for getting it passed the testing station?

It is possible to ride the bike without plate direct to a MVSA station (mine will be in Kirkby, Merseyside) but, what about getting its normal MOT, can it be ridden there first? Or does it need an MOT before the big inspection?

Got 3 weeks before out the country again.

Thanks all.

you worry too much - ive never ridden in the dark on this bike without my aux lights on, and the headlight is so poor anyway...

And its a grey import.

Bought it four years ago and theyre a decent dealer from my experience, so i have no reason to twist.

Grey import? More likely classed as a parallel import, V5 should show if bike was previously registered overseas..see section 3 of V5.
Either way you will need to inform your Insurance company if you havent done so already.

Which BMW dealer did the MOT? The one local to you uses or did use a local independant.

UK lens is different, it can be rotated but as has been said it will 'look crooked'

Light

From the manual

remove the windscreen
remove the fairing
slacken clamp screw (this is self evident when looking at it)
press the headlight against the stop (as is this)
left stop for driving on left (twist headlight)
right stop for driving on right (as above)
re-install everything.

been mot'd in past (when bought) by BMW main dealer.
Been mot'd since then at independants
only was mentioned at the independant last week.

if it is not needed for the MOT then i am not bothering, if it is I AM bothered.

Will turn lens if needed, thanks for the help. :thumb2

good site this (normally!) :D very grateful sirs.

Done it. Noticed there are 3 stops on the headlamp ring.
Anyhow, looking at the bike from the front, the rectangle on the lens is sloping to the left.
Is that correct for UK roads?

Twenty odd years since riding a bike here in the UK and I have 2 now to try and get on the road hopefully by next year. Spend too much time overseas.

Regards,

Steve

The above link is to the online official Government testing manual used by all test stations in the UK so this is what you want to refer to. It tells you all you need to know about the motorcycle MOT test, and what constitutes a pass or fail.

Go to page 1.2 and you will see this relates to headlights. Page 1.6 refers to the 'aim' of the beam (main and dipped) and how this is checked. Click through the pages and there are some diagrams showing how the beam should appear if it is set up correctly. If the beam aim is not correct it is a fail.

I hope that is of help.

i reckon BMW dealers :D need to do a little homework then...

they are shockign headlights it has to be said... love my spots!

dismantled the cockpit cover etc and rotated the light anticlockwise (when lookign from the front) and it has worked a treat.
Happier i'm not blinding people now!

BWM have asked me to send the headlight ref no from the lamp casing so they can check its spec.

My bike now looks a little weirder :) - the headlight rectangle is at an angle..!
