Hi All

This will be my first venture at camping.

I would like to have some advice regarding equipments, do's and dont's

My budget to buy the camping equipment is around £250.

The bike I am riding on is the GS Rallye Sport. I am riding Solo.

No offroading.

Intend to cook my own food (buying supplies at local stores).

will be travelling in UK mainland only.

Thank you

If you're planning on going any great distance, book a weekend at a local campsite. You can work out what you are missing and what you are carrying that you don't need.

There are loads of threads on here to help you along but you should be able to get everything you need for your £250. Think long and hard before buying anything as most people take too much stuff that they never use. I've just come back from South Wales at the Horizon HUBB, that would of been a cracking time to start.

Don't go too cheap on the tent, I made that mistake many many years ago and a storm moved in.....safe to say my tent was more like a tea bag than a tent, everything soaked.
Trangia stoves are great compact bits of kit, and if you want to take food with you then boil in the bag are great. I use "look what we found" can be found in Waitrose and taste lovely. Chilli, casseroles, etc. Uncle Ben rice.
Get yourself a decent sleeping mat and sleeping bag.
Head torch to find your way to the toilets or your tent when coming back from the pub.

Lifeventure towel (very small wrapped up)

Cheers

Tent : buy a two man, and get one with a porch - you can get undressed / leave wet gear in there... I picked up a lovely Vango of this site for £70.

sleeping bag three season - will be fine in the UK

Decent self inflating mattress ... Decathlon do some good ones.

Blow up pillow

Toilet roll and wet wipes

Washing line and pegs - tree to bike to allow towels etc to dry

Combined shower and hair washing gel

Gas burner and non stick pan set

Spork

Sharp knife/penknife

Plate

Cup

Kettle

Small washing up liquid

Small rubbish bags

Side stand puck - soft ground etc

Chair ( at the end of the day, sitting in a chair with a beer and your meal is simply the best....) sitting on the floor is pants ESP if wet...

Halve the clothes you would normally wear...

I've travelled all over Europe using this kit set... All of it designed for walkers so mostly small and light.

I also have a packing system - all clothes etc in waterproof roll bag on rear seat / rack - if I choose a hotel that's all I take in...

R/H pannier - tent / sleeping bag/ cooking gear

L/H pannier - waterproofs / gloves/ camera kit / puncture repair

Chair / roll mat on top of panniers....

One more thing - from decathlon - a small plastic chopping board - costs a £1 and so useful....

One thing I also have is a small 1st aid pack - plasters/ibuprofen etc....

For your budget and trip, you clearly dont need it all, but here are my panniers and camp gear that I have:

What are you including in the equipment list? 250 is not a lot at all for good equipment. You can hack the small things, but a tent, sleeping back etc will be worth more than that. You could do it on the super cheap but you get what you pay for.

Put a wanted ad on the site. See what you are offered. You may have to be patient but I'd be surprised if you did not get nearly all you need.

Tent : buy a two man, and get one with a porch

Three man is better.

Washing line and pegs - tree to bike to allow towels etc to dry

Don't forget a towel. I have a microfibre sheet towel 125 cm x 60 cm. Folds into a pack 6" x 4" x 1".

I hate sleeping mats. I take an airbed and footpump. a bit bulky but comfortable. Actually, it's probably less bulky than many self-inflating camping mats. I was given one as a present. When deflated it rolls up to about 80 cm wide and 20 cm diameter. I used it once.

You are in the beautiful part of the country and can very easily do a few dry runs over the weekend before the big one. Suggest you do that.

I hike and I have some good budget kit for that. My air bed came from Decathlon. I use a blow up bed. (For biking I carry a foot pump. For walking I use my lungs). I use a Snugpack 3 season sleeping bag but for summer use I use a lightweight summer bag from mountain warehouse. I have a small Chinese made stove that sits on the ground with its gas feed attached by a tube. I carry spare gas canisters and an adapter to convert continental type gas containers to a screw in fitment. My hiking tent is a 2 man and, imo, is to low to get my kit off if it's wet and I can't sit up easily. For biking I have a Vango Rock 300 (currently around £40. It has all the space I need but isn't a very high quality tent but I use it x2 a year. If I could have afforded it t the time I would have bought a better dome tent that had more head room and would have doubled for motorbike and hiking. I didn't have £3-500 so I made some compromises. On the bike I can carry a heavier tent. (My hiking tent is a 2 man Coleman Cobra.
)
On the bike I carry a cheap pot set from eBay and camping cutlery and a small 3 cup coffee pot for decent coffee.
I use 2xdecathlon microfibre towels on the bike because it's not weight critical. I have a powerbank to recharge headset, phone and any other electronics and I have a headtorch, again from decathlon.
Walking I'll carry less than 15lbs, on the bike I don't care quite so much.

Ask a question like that and you'll get a million answers. Solo camping. I don't solo but I bring my lad with me. He is almost 15 and over 6 foot. Tent we like to be able to stand. I like a chair. Sleeping bag I use a double for me. Cooking? Just a single burner. Your budget seems ok to kit out till you find your preferences. Those roll top bags come in handy. So do binliners. JJH

I'm just amazed that all fits in one bag! :)

Down bag, packs up tiny - tent has carbon fibre poles,
Pack size 2kg, single burner gas stove with spider legs and SS lines to bottle, trangia Ali pan set!!

In GSA panniers I still have room for shoes!

I could use some more compact gear but I'm able to fit the stuff I need, although sometimes there's only room for one bottle!
