you will need to scroll down to the bottom to see the info

but have came across to problems.

the 1st is the bracket for the foot peg / rail to bolt on to does not line up and pushing the rail it still wont get them to line up, it looks like i my need to drill a new hold closer the the silencer it self.

the 2rd is the rear mounting tab is very far away from the frame. its as if the tab was welded on to far round. but the 1st tab lines up fine.

the bold that goes thought the subframe / frame and the silencer bracket is lined up ok and have got a bolt in the hole.

the old silencer fitted was a sito one of the rounded ones.

buy looking at the photo have i got one for a r100gs?/

thanks sean

hi mate

not got the rubber thing as both brackets were bolted on to the frame on the old one.
the gap on the rear tab is 2cm so i guess the rubber block will take up the space

the other 2 brackets fit a part from the foot peg hole that is 2 1/2 cm above the hole in bracket so its as if the hold was 1st drill a bit off.

thanks sean

Have you got the first tab on the INSIDE of the subframe rail?

If you have it located on the outside of the rail, it'll never fit.

the rear tab does fit on the outside, mind.

both tabs are on the out side.

just going to drill a new hole in the bracket so i can fit the foot peg ect

This is (I believe) how the standard silencer is supposed to be mounted. At least it's the only way it can be made to fit on mine - although I guess the Keihan system may not be identical to the standard pipe....

If the two brackets have the same orientation it would be impossible to fit the rear rubber bobbin as there wouldn't be any space for it. The rear of the silencer would just end up angled out from the subframe (which would also mean it was wrongly angled inwards at the other end, possibly casing the other problem you mention),

If the brackets have opposite orientation, and the front bracket is bolted to the inside of the subframe, with the rear bracket on the outside, the silencer ends up parallel to the subframe and there is space for the bobbin

the diagram below may explain a bit better what it should look like. I could be wrong; I just know that I was a bit puzzled by this when I was refitting my silencer and this was the solution I got to that didn't require anything beign forced into place or drilled. The BMW parts diagrams also add to the confusion...

thanks mate

will try with the front tab on the inside and the rear tab on the out side to see if the rail will line up.

the standard one was fitted with both tabs on the out side of the frame with out the rubber bobbing but it did melt the rear mudguard a we bit on the side.

Dont overtighten the rubber bobbin or it will just snap in two. :blast

Guess how I found that out. :augie

Just got my muffler back from the exhaust repairer , and agree with SeanW completely.

The PO had put both brackets on the outside and just wedged it in.

Result was that the rubber bobbin had split, the top bracket had cracked, and the muffler had cracked almost all the way round just below the footrest bracket.

IMHO it is essential that when you fit the complete system it is sitting with as little stress in the system as possible - that is, all the bolt holes should line up and the exhaust de in the correct plane before the bolts etc are tightened up.

I dont think the rubber bobbin should be taking much of the fixing load , I suspect it is more of a damper, so it should be packed out so that there is as little tension on the rubber as possible.

The secret with the rubber mounted systems on cars is to align it after it is fitted by heating it with oxy torch until it is red hot and pretty soft and letting it take its natural line, but that option is not available to us!

going to have an look at it later to day and see if i can get it to sit right.

Always on compression...

go it on

i had to lossen right off the other too bolts holding the rail on and still had use a bit of force to get the peg back on but all done up tight and seems to be lined up ok.

is there any thing i can do to stop the foot peg touching the silencer when its up

it a hell of a lot quiter and sounds better to.
