Despite my advanced age and 5 years experience on (a) standard GS1150, plus years on R1100Rs, 3 x K75s, K1100LT etc, and even a GS1200, it was only yesterday I had a chance for a long (long) ride on a GS1150 Adventure and for that I had to buy the thing.

Anyway, lets say I like it.

But it's a very different to the GS1150 and perhaps moreso than others have gotten over in these hallowed e-pages. OK, for the teeming hordes of you who have made the change you know what I am talking about, intuitively even if not in so many written words.

The engine seems somehow smoother and more "turbine-droney" than the standard GS1150. The gears are different but you only notice when you get to 6th and notice it's subjectively (and objectively) lower than the E "sixth" on the GS1150, but it's so odd you fixate on it for a while.

But the Adv does seem faster ...... it swoops up through the gears and really advances; it is surprising.

There's a bit more vibiness at 70 mph in 6th but you get over it.

I rode home in a howling gale, rain, biblical lightning etc before the weather got quieter and noticed the Adv is more affected by sidewinds than the standard GS1150 ....... it's a bit "whoah boy" at first as you feel the bike is wandering off on its own. That tank plus the weight must be the reason ?

The ABS (never wanted it before) can give you some scary moments too as there appears to be a BMW elf between you and the brakes, altering all your inputs to adjust the outputs. I did give myself a few heartstopper moments on the rainswept roundabouts and sharp turning A roads.

I've had my bars both raised and brought back using TTech Bar Risers which make the seating quite nice and laid back and make the bike look taller.

The bike is definetly longer to the feel and has a very "alternative" taste to it. But it's more like a GS1150 Deluxe rather than a GS1150 round-the-world bike, and to be honest (and others on this site have said it better) I can't see what there is on it that genuinely makes it feel or look like a bike you could nip off to Alaska on at the drop of a hat. In fact, it needs a lot more techniks to be a real "Adventure LWR" bike.

The aluminium panniers look amazing and meaningful in a "rufty tufty" kind of way but the ergonomics are a challenge. Try getting on/off the bike and spot the difference. For a 30" inside legger like me it's a clunk, click every trip as the right boot hits first pannier left then pannier right ..... I'd need a course in yoga or gymnastics to master it. I do miss those basic System panniers. And the passenger has just as much "fun", plus the delight of having those "lugs" poke into the thighs. Hmm. BMW usually get ergonomics right but not this time imho.

The Adv has the 1-piece lowered seat in what looks like a kind of "acrylic black" finish. It's OK I guess and looks like you could spill your soup on it and then just hose it off. It's shaped beautifully but it's not as purposeful as the standard GS1150 2-piece seat, which begs the question (so to speak) as to why the Adv seat is put forward by BMW as more "Adventurey" than the more practical 2-piece seat on the standard GS1150. BMW engineers may respond to this if they're reading !

It is (as others have said) scarily heavier and more of a "monsterbeast" of a bike. In fact it could be dangerous in the wrong hands, and I'd warn anyone without the right experience and attitude to stay away from it. It's more of a
"Zen and the Art of the Adventure" experience ..... the mind has to go with the bike's character and nature or the bike will truly dump you. Like most motorcycles which appeal to the thinking rider (and if you own a GS of any type, you're probably a lot smarter than people credit you for) you really need to "think" about the way you work together with the bike ... it's as if the bike has a character, and it's not a pusscat, more of a feisty redhead with a fiery nature but huge sex appeal. You love it, you hate it, you love it again, and so on.

Is it "better" than the standard GS1150 ? Not in the sense that it's a superior bike, in fact the standard GS1150 is a really excellent bike (BMW reliability and cost complaints notwithstanding). It's just a different kind of experience of a similar formula.

Is it worth the change ? For what I want now as opposed to what I've been happy with for the last 5 years: yes.

So if anyone out there is thinking about a GS1150 Adventure, I'd say try one, and try it for an hour or so. And don't be upset if you decide to get one not now but in the future. Or not get one at all. If I had the £££, I'd have a GS1100, a GS1150 and an Adventure (and a GS1200 for when I felt I really needed something a few lbs lighter).

Just a few observations.

That essay deserves a retort and all I can say is well put Alex, pretty much sums it up mate :)

I totally undrstand what you are feeling in respect of the GSA. Since moving over from sports bikes I have found a whole new world of motoring. The sheer size and weight gives the bike a presence which other models cannot not match. no matter what you throw at it it just keeps going. It is an "experience" everytime I take it out.

what does the Mrs think of the seat :o

me & mrs cookie rode an ADV for an hour or so today to get an answer to that very question. verdict: much the same.

Pilion Verdict on the 1150 Adv rear seat

OK, but not as all-round comfortable as the GS1150 standard seat. Less room.

Well, Monsieur Gauloises, it took me a few years but I got there in the end.

Pictures ? ..........

Mark; haven't got any yet (spent most of yesterday cleaning off the gale swept gunk thrown up by Dorset roads in what felt like a Force 10).

Will try to sort at the weekend.

However, pretty much 100% identical to all the pictures posted ........ seen one, seen 'em all ?

Which is fine by me as I have not seen another Adventure on the road for months and months. Most GS bikes I see these days are the GS1200s which seem to have taken over the world.

Congrats on the Adv Alex......it's the ultimate incarnation of the GS marque IMNSHO :thumb

PSI'd ask the missus how she finds the comfort on the back but she seems to go to sleep an awful lot so I'm not sure she knows :D

I guess it can't be too bad though ;)

Sorry, cannot agree.

I bought an 1150ADV earlier this year but did not sell my trusty 'standard 1150'.

I very much enjoyed the ADV covering 7k since march and the alloy luggage could holds so much more than the system cases on the standard.

But

I found the extra weight had height a handful in the Alpine passes, and the 6th gear a bit to low on the Autobahn. I had a lowered Corbin seat but still struggled to touch the floor on both sides even though I have a 32in inside leg. The standard screen gave far more turbulance than the MRA fitted to my standard. My standard handles better all be it with Ohlin shocks. The ADV twin spark is no smoother than my standard (both are fitted with a Y piece, Remus and have been recently serviced).

Final compromise......keeping my 02 standard and trading my 03 ADV for a 12ADV.

Mike

Final thought......I suppose if I spent as much on the ADV as my standard it might be bring them to par.

easier to move around on solo and standing in rougher terrain on the one piece than the two.

Less likely to lose ya bollocks and slightly narrower as well as not having great changes in height from front to back.

I'm pleased in a way that you find you can't agree. Why ? Because I'm getting round to believing that not all Adventures are quite the same. Believe me, I know the 2000 GS1150 pretty well and I know the differences between it and the GS1150 Adv that I now ride.

I was as surprised as anyone when I found that with a standard screen and standard fittings I wasn't getting any of the turbulence and buffetting that I had on my standard GS1150 until I Tobinated it (thanks Tobers) and added an MRA 2-piece about 3 years ago.

And with the lowered Adv seat and a 30" inside leg I can get both feet on the ground (yep, surprised me too).

That sixth gear is not exactly my favourite but as I really don't like autobahns I don't notice it as much as I would do if I was a serious 3-lane tourer.

My conclusion is that these bikes have subtle differences and that an engine on one bike isn't necessarily identical the same as another.

Oh well, lets see how it goes.

GS1200 Adv is one heck of a bike but looks a tad like Panzerwagen 'weaponry' rather than a motorcycle. Looking at some of the German military machinery at the end of WW2, you can see some emerging heritage ! And tall too, so I hope you get the right seat.

BONOX .............

Your dangly bits would need some exposure to get biffed by the seat; still you guys do some strange things so I'm not arguing.

Would agree that Adv seat looks like it would chamfer less off than the stepped seat during a sudden bump.

I have just bought an 04 ADV with all the bells and whistles. I still have my 2001 GS1150 and I agree with a lot of what you have said.

I have only had the ADV for two days but I notice it's a lot harder to get onto the centre stand..... nearly dropped it this morning :o

I prefer the "E" 6th on mt 1150 by far. I have now fitted the tobinators on the ADV so just a matter of finding the sweet spot now.

Turbulance though  could not believe it at first as I always ride with the chin piece up, couldn't on the ADV.

Prefer the "look" of the ADV over the 1150 standard but thats personal choice.

Deffo feels a bit smoother as well but early days yet. Have the standard red and grey seat and only notice the extra height when trying to peddle the bugger backwards.... bit of toe spin :D

Have allways wanted one and I now have the bike I have yearned for for three years so well chuffed.

others stuff ...

lovely long 1st gear, v handy for really really steep terrible roads - thats been a massive help for me in the himalayers.

shocks are wonderful, just ask my girlfriend, the standard 1150 shocks were less absorbant, again good for poo roads.

seat on the adv is definately worse, again I need a sheepskin to stop the effects of numbbum.

my 2p worth

Brian

Try the same model year bikes before stating one is better than the other i.e. both bikes 2003 for instance -

No difference between them, and i ride lots of examples , just small cosmetic differences, higher shocks and a bigger tank etc etc - I put a bigger tank on my standard GS , it's now perfect for me .

I also wouldn't say the ADV is better than the std 1150.

After 55k miles on std 1150's with a large tank I bought a Non ABS single spark, 5k miles ADV for £5k inc loads of extras :P Then set about creating my perfect GS,

Std 2 piece Corbin seat
Std silver rocker covers,..... Blue ADV covers suck as do ADV crash bars :nono
Uprated spring on Ohlins shock
MRA screen std screen on tobinators
Performance chip
Y piece
NN pegs
bar risers
Lights, air horn, baglux etc etc etc £££££feckin etc :spitfire

So I don't think the ADV is any better, but it does seem to drive better so is possibly a better starting place to create your perfect bike than a std.

Love the one you’re with.

Alex, enjoyed you’re write up btw. :thumb

I`m just Stravaig ;)

Was just up your way recently ......... Loch Ness, Loch Oich and then round to Dalwhinnie before heading back down to Perth.

Was a tad wet.

I find the Adv seat to be more comfortable than the standard two piece. I'm only 11 stone though.
