I've been following this over on ADV. It's scary but it doesn't put me off quite yet. These bikes have been around now a while and are built to use hard which a lot of them have (including mine) and this is the first I've ever heard of failing. I think it's an isolated incident but I also think BMW need to step forward and take some responsibility.
Only ripped off my number plate holder once, but don't think the airshock bottomed out luckily
Got me thinking about an Ohlins now
Only heard of one swingarm and a frame breakage - different bikes

Hmm, so his suspension was bottoming out form when he acquired the bike and he carried on riding it offroad?
And how high did he land that from?

I broke the swingarm on my Bultaco 350 trails bike and my brother snapped his frame (at the headstock) on his Suzuki TS125 many moons ago. Sometimes things break when they get enough punishment.

I'm not suprised after reading the link. When the hydraulic pre load has blown and/or the shock is constantly bottoming out then something has to give.

Like Tim says, when it becomes a rigid, something has got to give, and that looks like the weakest point in the casting.
It might be a flaw in the cast, but I've seen bigger and better things than that give up the ghost with enough abuse. Group A cosworth trailing arms are like magnesium bridge supports, and I've seen plenty of those broken like matchwood, and not just on the jumps, but rough roads.

Why does he think its an off road bike. Isnt the Xcountry a 'city bike' with long travel suspension

The X=country should be able to handle off road but not as well as teh C-Challenge. I think these X-Country's are a bargain as they go for peanuts and great little bikes. Same engine as the x-challenge too

The "Country" is an off road bike. They use it at the BMW offroad school and market it as an off-road bike.
