Somewhere handy to take switched 12v near the battery

I'm putting my fuse box just above the air filter and I need to find a switched 12v source near there if I can. I'd rather not run a wire from the lights if I can avoid it.

Any ideas? Is there a switched source into (what looks like) the diagnostic plug above the air filter? If so, which wire?

Also - is it OK to turn on the ignition with the tank removed? It's not going to go arse over tit because the tank electrics are unplugged?

there's loads of em in the fusebox, i took one off the horn fuse i think.

yeah you can turn ignition on with tank d/c

Just wondering....

..... is there a switched feed in one of the wires running into the headlight switch?

The previous owner took a feed from one of these wires to previously installed spot lights as seen in the photo below. I presume this is the actual headlight wire (it's white).

There's probably 5 other wires going in there and surely one must be a switched 12v as the headlight switch must be fed from somewhere.

Any ideas which wire to go for? Not my preferred location but sure if there's already one wire coming from there, might as well be two wires....

Cheers....

I take that the fuse box has a relay ? if not remember you'll need one.

the easiest as Carl says is the Horn wiring, when I did this I made up a wee jig that had a spade connector and a fuse holder. that way you can plug the spade connectors into the fuse position and take a spur of one of the lines to feed the fuse box relay, no need to break into the wiring loom.

Right, I reckon I'm going to tap into the switched 12v in the photo above. It's the easiest for right now and just use a snap lock like was used for the high beams.

My next question is about wire colours. Have the wire colours changed since 2000? I have a wiring diagram for the 1150 published in 2000 and it says that the 12v into the headlight switch should be "White with Yellow". There is no such colour wire there (in the bunch of wires in photo above) but the other thick wire is "Green with White". Could this be what I'm after and the colours have just changed over the years?

Snaplocks

Indeed - horrid things.

It'll last about 10 minutes before you get intermittent failures (that's assuming you can get a decent connection from the word go).

Strip and solder, ideally cut the target feed and slip some heatshrink on too (or do it fully dressed if you like ;), but you'll soon regret using a snaplock) .

fair enough - I'll take the current snaplock out and put a piggyback female spade in. Got some liquid insulation tape the other day - great stuff.

So back to the wire. Can anyone tell me is the "Green with White stripe" wire the one I'm after?

I am currently wiring lights in my '99 1150GS. On the ADVRider site I was told to use:
"...the parking light wire for 'switched' power. This is a blue/white & brown pair of wires inside the headlight shell. Use the blue/white wire."

I'll find out this weekend...

Regarding the diagnostic plug above the air filter I read an article which said use the green wire with blue stripe...doesn't exist on my bike...:(.

Best way is probably to test the wire with a multimeter but I'm no electrician.

But you can have the parking lights on without the ignition on, so if someone played with the switches, could they flatten the battery?

No - you need the keys to turn on the parking lights. Put the keys in the ignition, lock the handlebars to the left and turn the key all the way around to the left it think. The parking light also comes on with the ignition.

This is where I ended up taking the switched power from. Not tested it yet though as the battery is disconnected.

adventure site

This is an american site american spec bike the lights are on all the time so won't work with yours.
dave ( I hate christmas) GS Roll on 2010

Just tested it. I switched on the ignition and the pilot bulb lit up (ie parking bulb in headlight).

I took the switched power from here.

It didnt hurt mine turning the bike on with the tank off. Even runs a bit with the fuel in the lines.

There is a connector for the rear lights that is perfect for powering VERY low power devices such as a sat nav, or alternatively could be used for a relay and then take the main power direct from the battery.
