After a decade of using Nokia's I'm tempted by all the rave reviews from Tuned In, Tobers etc about the K800i.

How tough are Sony Ericssons compared with Nokias. (6230 bounces very well).. What's battery life like in the real world etc?

I see it has a little slide bit on the lens... How will this last over time?

K800i

padge just bought one, same boat as you had nokia for the last 4 phones time for a change.

ease of use fool proof just like nokia; joystick in middle to navigate around . everything laid out.

camera is brilliant / flash / zoom / red eye / panoramic / timer / loads of other little effects you can do. so good i dont realy need to take me sony cyber-shot with me any more les wait is always a good thing :thumb

the lens cover seems very sturdy but its only 5 days old.

battery is lasting 2 days but i havnt put it down still playing with it. overaul very pleased with it bit pricey at £250  but so far worth every penny

I'm on my third K series phone and they just keep getting better. To me there is no competition, the Sony is superior!

I too used Nokia's for years, after using a K series phone you then realise just how crap the Nokia's menu is.

Be warned, the K800's battery is not one of it's strengths, but it's a powerful phone that requires a lot of juice, I guess this should be expected but it's worth the trade off!

Get one, you Will be well impressed for sure :thumb

i find it a great phone, had S.E's since the t610. battery life loads better than my m8's nokia's. just a shame they went to the mirco memory card as i've got a 2 gig one for my old k750.

As above about the phone :thumb ....But to increase battery life turn the flash off auto as every time you open the lense cover the flash charges up and uses power even if it doesn't go off. ;)

Cheers guys..Just called our suplier and the lady with the lovely voice will call around with it later today..

Battery life on Nokias is crap (about a day) so I always had a few genuine spares from old phones (2 in the laptop bag, one in the topbox etc).

Had a look at some accessories on Ebay.. Has anyone tried the cheap batteries you can from the Hong Hong suppliers? (such as Ebay item 250027895671 )

Not sure if they're just crap, or potentially damaging crap?

This is the phone that Tobers has recommended for me. I am just waiting for Vodaphone to let me know when the other he suggested are available but I may well switch networks to O2 unless Vodaphone can up the deal..

I had a Sony E T68i some years ago and that was very robust. :)

Much as it pains me to say it, turning off 3G dramatically increases battery life on the K800. It's in settings->connectivity->mobile networks->GSM/3G

Turn it on again if you want to browse the web or link up to your PC of course, but I set mine to "GSM only" otherwise.

just turned my flash & 3G off - top tips, thanks :clap

and i also think it's a great phone - had mine about a month now :thumb

Changed to the K800i about 3 weeks ago at upgrade time and am very impressed with it.

Like a few who have already commented I've been using Nokia for years but the comments I had heard about the K800i made me decide to change and I'm more than happy with the result. :thumb

Arrived yesterday..Very impressed but my brain is still thinking nokia.
Just concerned about how it will stand up longterm.. Screen seems big and easliy damaged and lens slider cover seems like it'll get ripped off when I'm trying to take out of pocket.

First thing I did when mine arrived was nipped into local shop and bought a Body Glove cover for it. You can still use the camera and phone with it fitted and it definetly protects the screen and stuff. :thumb

Tuned

I read that review when deciding on which phone for my last upgrade, as I said have always been a Nokia user up to now but wen it came down to it my decision was finalised when I had both phones in me sweaty mits in Carphone Warehouse as the Nokia seemed much bigger than the Sony (it's only a couple of mm but thats how it felt  )

What is it with the pics that has changed your opinion?

i think the nokia takes a better picture... and has a better lens cover... i don't like the SE cover i think it will break somewhere down the line, i don't do phone covers :) ... i have to consider this against the good SE interface

the Nokia N73 looks crap in pics but all right in real life i used a 73 and was able to browse this site which i couldn't on my w800i that i have now... i need a go on a k800i to see what its web access is like

There is a very good thorough review of the camera capabilites of the 3MP Nokia vs the 3MP Sony-Ericsson here:

http://www.gsmarena.com/3mp_test_nokia_n80_se_k800-review-79.php

Executive summary is the SE is by some margin the better photo camera, the Nokia however takes video clips at a higher resolution.

I have to add my personal opinion as a Nokia user from 1995 to 2003, and using Sony Ericssons predominantly since then, with the odd Motorola and Samsung as secondary phones ... the picture quality from current generation Sony Ericssons is simply beyond comparison. The other brands make crappy gimmicky phone cameras, whereas the k800 camera is the only one I would actually leave the girlfriends compact digital camera at home for.... and we often do. I also have a brand new Samsung E900 with 2MP camera and I would add that as a camera it is utter utter crap.

All we need now are 3 or 4 x optical zooms on camera phones ...
