I’m using Windows 98 ,when I turn on my computer it now takes ages to get to where I can use it. It used to go from the password screen straight to the desktop, load the task bar and off we go in about 30 seconds now it takes about 3 minutes.

A couple of months ago it slowed due to a DOS window opening with the title like escrips or something but now this has been joined by a succession of 3 other DOS windows opening.

How can I stop these things opening?

Will it speed it up if I can?

I remember a while back someone posting a ‘Speed up your computer’ type link but I can’t find it now.

I would normally PM the resident I.T. guru Steptoe about my computing problems but due to his current state of mind, I fear I would be told to “ Do One ”

If I still worked offshore, I would probably recommened a spur lash. That should fix it.:D

Uninstall all unused programs, delete all unused/unwanted data, anti spyware sweep, anti virus sweep & disk defragment should help. Then turn on the Windows automatic update to make sure you have all the current service packs etc

this is the standard line for slow pcs. in my experience it never makes much/any difference.

installs of W98 do not last very long, when i used it, longest i ever went was 10 months before reinstall.

Lol.....Cookie's right......W98 is pants.

What sort of processor does your PC have, how much RAM and what do you have left space-wise on your Hard drive??

From that, we should be able to see if you can run XP.....I'd be happy to come round and whack a copy on after Lehinch if you like.

Download and install all 3.

The Microsoft Anti-spyware beta is bloody good too......It found 12 things on this PC (at Dani's) that the three Mike mentioned above didn't find at all......

It also managed to clean up one in particular (some toolbar installer but I don't remember which one) that none of the others, or any specific fix exe's on the t'internet had managed to clear out.

On my machines now I keep the MS beta thing running all the time, then once a week I've got several other things scheduled to run automatically on top of that.

Dowmloading porn can have its drawbacks

Thanks everyone

Bill I only use it for a few letters and the internet at the weekends so it dosen't need to be flash and I'll probably keep it till it breaks.

It's not un-useable, it's just taking longer and longer to fire up.

I'll try those websites thanks Cheesy.

Anyway for the technicaly minded (and Steptoe).......

It has a Pentium II

128 ram

9Gb hard drive with just under 4 free

and runs on smokeless coal.
