Sound mirrors - can I get at 'em.

You know those sound mirrors down at Dungie, well I was wondering if you get up close to them, or the others on the hill above Hythe.

Does anyone know or been to them?

If so I'd love to have a look at them too. I'm a bit far away, but would incorporate it into a trip down that way...

You could, a long time ago....My Aunt lives just below the big array outside of Romney and I walked up to it, but this was 20 years ago so not of any use to you whatsoever I'm afraid

I'd suggest looking online for the relevant OS map and see if there are any footpaths up to them......

The one at Hythe is easy to get to.

You can park on the side of the canal on Burmarsh Road and then cross the Royal Military Canal by the model of the reflector and then a 100 yards along the Military Road and 200 yards up the hill to the main reflector.

It's fenced off nowadays to try to keep the yobs from applying graffitti to its surfaces.

When you come down and need a refreshing drink the Prince of Wales is about 300 yards on the junction of Dymchurch Road and Burmarsh Road.

Fancy that as well. Saw the Denge Marsh reflectors on Coast and would like a go. Shame can't make next weekend but 13th September... Mmmmm!

Other than the guided walks, there is no public access to the Dungeness mirrors, which are in the middle of a disused gravel pit. It used to be possible for trespassers to gain access to the mirrors, but this is no longer physically possible. The deep lake created by gravel extraction has been extended to completely surround the mirrors, which are now on an island. The only access to the island is via a swing bridge, which is locked in the open position when not being used for guided walks.

We might be able to arrange a tosser-trip if there is enough interest I guess.

The starting point is on the seafront at Greatstone between Romney Sands and the Pilot. Pilot excellent for fish and chip lunch... although the Britannia is generally better!

The walk is three miles over shingle.

Yes it may be from there but, there is a short cut through the caravan park at greatstone There is also a Geochache at the mirrors site too. You can walk pretty close to them but are prevented from accessing the mirrors themselves by a stretch of water. When they run the tours you cross this on a clever swiveling bridge. Of course if the weather is typically tropical you can swim the 15 yards if you are that desperate

It doesn't look like three miles on the OS map using the footpath from Taylor Road, but perhaps that's the nearest car-park for everyone to gather rather than along Coast Drive and walking up through Prior Road or Romney Sands?

I might have a ride out tomorrow and have a look...

That's my feeble excuse for a ride sorted - Local sound mirror is about 3 miles from the local BM dealer and I must have passed by hundreds of times when going to work in Sunderland.

I was going to Brands but something has come up and I'll Plus the BSB, so not out for long. Will bimble down to Romney Sands and have a look, might get the engine warmed up there and back!
