I'm considering looking for a salvage R1150GS as the basis for a project later in the year. It would need to be straight (no chassis or fork damage) with a good engine and 'box. I plan to replace screen, tank, seats, rack, rear light/numberplate holder, indicators, exhaust, handlebars, wheels and tyres, so condition of these bits is not important.

Any ideas on a source for a suitable bike? I just need some idea of costs at this stage to price up the whole project.

Cheers,

Argy

You`re probably better off getting a not too expensive but complete bike.
That way you can ride it straight away to prove that all the gubbins you want to keep function correctly.
Then sell off all the stuff you don`t want to keep.
You`d get a tidy return for what you`re saying you don`t need.

Argy,
I went to a number of salvage auctions with the same idea, and viewed a lot of over-bid c**p! You would be better, as tarka suggested, buying a running bike and selling what you don't want

you could try
cheshire Motorcycle salvage
a google search should find them
they are based in macclesfield
not too cheap tho'

try Alan at AGB bikes in Banks outside Southport 01704 227413, I bought my 1150gs there, I know hes still has a few other bmws in stock.
