My last night in South America after 5 wonderful weeks touring Chile and Argentina. Dropped the bike to the port in Valparaiso this morning and I fly back to Ireland in the morning. The missus was with me for the first couple of weeks and she was the perfect travelling buddy. She picked up 3 broken metatarsals for he trouble! My fault when crossing a river that washed away the road - get off and check first!!! Ended up bogged down in foot thick mud, bike fell and her foot got trapped. Despite that she did another 4 days on the back without complaint. She has definitely earned her strips as an adventurer. Same day, stopped by another washed away river a guy in a pick up (with the help of his 2 mates and a track) got my GSA on the back and drove me across. What a hero.
Loads of amazing roads but my favs were
- San Perdro de Atacama (Chile) to Salta (Argentina) Starting at 35* heat climbing to 4800 metres on across snow topped mountains at zero
- Mendoza (argtentina) to Santiago; Ruta 7 and the legendary Snails Pass, endless switchbacks
Caught up with the Dakar at Salta which was amazing
The bike was faultless as usual over 6000 miles. That said, I am done riding Metzler Tourance. The just are good enough for endurance stuff. Ripped the (fairly new) rear tyre to threads one day on 50 miles of hard going gravel. They just don't have enough grip for this kind of riding. Suggestions welcome.
Visited the BMW dealer in Osorno and it is one of the best I've been to.
Anyone thinking riding South America do it! Pics to follow when I get home
PS. Brought my gopro and it is just the best way to record your trip
