My Garmin SPIII is powered from an extension lead that is piggy backed onto the accessory socket on the left had side. Every now and then it loses external power for no apparent reason and goes onto battery power. I have to switch off the SPIII and the engine and restart, sometimes it will do this 3/4 times in quick succession before settling down and the external power stays constant. Any idea what is causing this.....never had this problem with my 1150....mutter mutter.:blast

At one point early on in the 1200's history/evolution, there was a problem with the software shutting down and restarting the accessory power. It was fixed with a firmware update at dealers.

How old is your 1200 ?? Perhaps it has this issue and needs an update?

Could also be a corroded connection of the wiring at the accessory socket connecting plug at the rear of the socket where to loom connects. Happened on my 2004 bike.

I had the same problem with my 2004 GS when the GPS was wired to the socket. I got fed up with it and wired it direct to the battery. problems went away

Mine is an 04 model; I'll check for the firmware update and also check the connections.

I can confirm this was also a problem with my 2004 GS following a firmware update in 2005- I had a Quest powered via the canbus. :(

A subsequent update later in 2005 then solved the problem :)

My secondhand 05 1200 came with a BMW Navigator II and the same thing keeps happening. Sometimes it stays on fine other times it turns it's self on and off at will. Where can I down load the update or if better how do I re-wire straight to the battery?

My dealer has just told me not to use the accessory socket power for GPS/Autocom because they can't be confident that it won't shut down on you. Some problem with the Aux socket software apparently. Their advice was to use a relay from the battery - switch using ignition dependant supply.

It's a dealer update, you can't update the bikes ecu yourself.

I fitted a 'Fuzeblock' with switched power to supply the accessories on my latest 1200 (triggered by the sidelight feed), much easier than using the rather pathetic accessory socket.

My SP3 cable broke its power wire up near the connector - worth a look or flex test with power on it :thumb2

Hi again - I just bought one of these:

Durite 0-726-12 Fused 20Amp 4 Terminal Make/Break Relay

I got mine from Ebay for £7.99 - its a fused micro relay which you can use to supply all of your accessory needs - just change the fuse to match your needs. Only 1 output but enough for Autocom/GPS/Kenwoods and a lot more.

A short-term fix is to do what Clive did with his 2004 1200 when it did the same thing, plug something into the accessory socket it will then remain powered and so will your GPS.
