Need a bit of technical help....

Got a Streetpilot 3 which I know is a bit aged, but does me fine. It currently has version 6 loaded on it and have got a 128mb card.

The memory size has been fine for me selecting the maps I need for the places I am going- a trip to Normandy was fine last year.

I am getting a bit more adventurous this year- got a trip coming up to the Vosges mountains (going from Harwich to Hook of Holland), across to the Black Forest and then north to the Harz mountains, then back to Hook of Holland again. I am not looking to get the whole of France and Germany on my GPS, only the maps and surrounding areas to ride around the areas I am going. Not bothered about putting the UK on it either as I can get to Harwich. I know with version 6 128mb isnt enough and will shortly be asking for someones assistance on the FS/Wanted forum, but can someone tell me whether two 128mb cards will be enough to just select the areas I need, or whether I will need a 256mb, or whether the map tiles are much bigger than this in the latest version of CN.

Not after the latest bling and building routes at home and putting them on the SP3 is good enough for me, but am I really going to have something more modern to get the maps I need?

Could you post your proposed route here then we could take a look at it and make a better judgment.

From my own experience of using the SP3 abroad I'd much rather have one 256mb card than two 128mb cards

IIWY I'd look at a 2nd hand 2610. Vastly quicker off route recalculation, effectively unlimited maps on a 2gb disk that cost's pennies, just as big screen, IMO a more user friendly interface etc etc.

It will depend to a certain extent if you've already paid the £45 for the unlock code though.

But to answer the question, two 128 cards will easily take you there and back. HTH

If you right-click on your route, and select the "Select Maps around Route" option, it will give you the size of memory required on the botton left hand side of the "Maps" tab. :thumb2

NB1: The danger with using 2 separate cards is that there's a good chance that you're going to miss some maps sets. We've probably all done it at some time. Your better off having the same map set twice than not at all, so if in doubt, whack it in. :D

NB2: Almost certainly on a long trip to Europe, you will come across new roads etc if you're still on V6. I was on V7 until very recently and was starting to find myself on roads which the GPS reckoned didn't exist. Your maps are even older than mine.

I was hoping to get all of V10 onto my 2Gb card (you could with the old V7 as the maps were 1.71Gb) but all of V10 is now "over 4Gb". :eek To save fannying around with loading maps, I was tempted to just get a bigger card, load the lot in 1 go and forget about them, but IIRC some people have had problems with cards over 2Gb in size.

Should be simple enough to "filter out" the countries you know you will never go to though....
Ireland, Finland, Denmark etc...:aidan

Very simple. That's how I got the sizes in the first place? :D

Useful Tip: When you choose a large area (say Germany) the mapsets are arranged in alphabetical order ie all the map names will be in order, but the countries will be all mixed up. However, if you click on the top heading marked "Area", you can re-arrange the mapsets in country order eg "Germany City Navigator V7" etc etc. You can then use Control and click to highlite the countries you want before deleting them from the list. :thumb

I'm not as thick as I look. :D
