Put the engine back in my bike yesterday (r100 gs).think I got the spacers on the front mouting bolt right but looking for clarification,Big spacer N/S.small spacer O/S.Just thought the gaps at the front looked off .Cheers
I asked the same question a while ago but failed to get a reply. There are three narrow spacers and one wide one, and when I took the engine out the long stud was at the front, the shorter one at the back, and the wide spacer on the front N/S, and the thin spacers front O/S and at the back. Now whether that's correct, I've no idea but that was how I found them. Nothing in Haynes about them.
It's good that we check up on such things as the previous owner might have tinkered with them and replaced them arse about face. I might make a slightly longer rear stud as I have a 'Surefoot' sidestand fitted which leaves precious little thread for the Nyloc nuts to grip onto.
Talking about double checking things which a PO might have altered, I noticed when stripping the bike down that the wiring harness was tucked into the headstock tubes, well not so much as 'tucked' more jammed in. I took pictures of the mess to help when replacing it but I must check their routes out. The same with the throttle/choke cables.
I think the 17mm longer front bolt and spacer are only there to fit the crash bars with the built in side stand so if you're using a Surefoot on the rear you could possibly just pick up one of the longer bolts and fit that?
You are right, and that's something I've thought about, but I have a rather nice lathe now and want to tinker. I shall also make a new set of spacers in alloy too.
I couldn't get on with the standard crash bar mounted side stand, not with my short legs. A daft design. With my left leg fully extended, the original sidestand would never get past the six o'clock position so getting off a laden bike was precarious. My 'Surefoot' replica is very good but pretty chunky so I am going to make another lighter version.
